Yes thanks Mancityred, my sister was telling me that she can get them for 1.14. Got some today from our Co-op travel agent, rate was 1.11 or 1.12 if you have a members card. So got them at 1.12 which i din't think was too bad. Hope it improves before we go to France at Easter though.

I wouldn't go along that path - international speculators pick off one country at a time. UK may well be next so personally I'm hoarding a few euros!

In the long term yes UK should have been in the euro before but certainly now would be a good time. During last years run on currencies the euro was hardly affected partly because it is such a big currency - like the dollar - the speculators don't have enough funds to cause a serious long run on the euro or the dollar: the pound is another matter ....

I think you will find that if the pound starts to improve against the euro our government will print more money (quantative easing ) this will then stop the pound rising , they are not interested in holidaymakers/savers/middle classes

Palaceboy

Who are they interested in apart from their own self interests??

Rumours of Italy being next in trouble.

As a matter of interest what sort of exchange rate are the lucky Winter Sun lovers, basking in glorious sun on the Costas (?????), getting on their Nationwide Debit Cards at the moment.

Last March/April we were getting 113/116 when the rate home here was 105 ish and less.

Had hope to be there ourselves but knee op put paid to that. Next year hopefully

Wishing you well for next year. I've just got some of my debit/credit statements from use in Germany last week: over the wek the NW debit card rate varied between 1.1 and 1.3 euro to the pound. My Smile debit card (used accidentally) was at 1.15 to the pound (but take off 3 for transaction charge!).

So it's still looking very unstable.

I have been offered euros on 3 month forward buying at 1.17, so it wouyld seem that there is an expectation of improvement of rate.
Might make sense to leave buying euros to the very last minute.

Don't forget the greed of the banks in slicing their margins off this rate

2 weeks ago I had to pay the deposit for our summer holiday. The exchangerate was at 1.14 Euros for the Pound.

And NO - I do not hope for a collaps of the Euro (I never wanted the Euro, but now have to live with it) - but I may be one of very few here...

Had your Government joined the Euro 2 years ago your exchangerate would have been hilarious. To Stuart: No feeling of "Schadenfreude" here, I am the guy with German plates on the car and a sticker in the window which says: "KEEP THE POUND!"

....and that is the advice nearly everyone we meet on the continent gives us.

I am not a "little Englander", and have no patriotic loyalty to to the pound, but I have a long memory, and remember the hike in prices after decimalisation, so for that reason I am happy staying with the pound. We only have to change the money once for most of our European travel.

We will use our nationwide card on our holiday when we need the cash.
Regards,
Jim.

Jim, I may be wrong here (wouldn`t be the first time) but I think Markus wants us to keep the pound because it makes it cheaper for him to holiday here

And the best of luck to him, but he has also had to put up with escalating prices at home, so he should enjoy any cheap holidays he has in the UK.

Most advise to keep the pound though, as it usually makes it cheaper for people in the UK at home.
Regards,
Jim.

Yes, I do enjoy cheap holidays - BUT - I advice you to keep the Pound out of the reasons Jim mentioned. We exchanged 2 DeutschMarks for 1 Euro (more or less) but most of the prices stayed where they were, just the DM was swapped for . To me it seems that we're now just starting to recover. I personally wish we hadn't joined!

Markus
