Planning our summer holiday.
Ferry booked Portsmouth to Caen. Thinking of heading down to Limoges so hubby can see some of Tour de France and also visit Oradour sur glane. We will be in our caravan so hoping to stay in a municipal close to town as possible. Is there enough in this area to warrant a weeks stay before we move on to our next destination. Only gonna book first site, then gonna just follow the weather.
Any ideas welcome for Limoges and what to do there.
Regards
Milly

Municipal at Limoges is here not far off the motorway exit & couple of miles from city centre. Theres history & culture everywhere in France & the area is nice enough so you should find things to do.

Hi Milly. One day over to Oradour, one day for the Tour de France, one day to wander around Limoges......then read your guide books to decide if there is anything else you want to see...... Or sit in the sun and eat and drink, or go for a swim....or move on. It's not something I could decide in advance.

I understand that the Limoges area is for those that prefer to holiday amongst farm animals.

I wouldn't want to spend a week in that area as I prefer sightseeing around hilltop villages and scenic gorges.

Camping d’Uzurat is a good campsite if you want to visit the City of Limoges. The guy that runs the site is very helpful with providing information. There is a supermarket within walking distance of the site and if you don't want to take the car there is a regular bus service on the main road.

My husband reckons that the municipal at Limoges has the best croissants ever (delivered by a local baker).

Oradour is (ahem) intense. It's something that will live with me forever, but I'm glad I went.
I went to Limoges 20 years ago and thought it was a dump, tbh. Maybe I picked the wrong day. It does have National Parks on both sides.

Angouleme is the city of the cartoon. It's very pretty and has cartoons on the walls all over the place.

Like Lizex we found Limoges unimpressive. I personally wouldn't want to spend more than a day there but I suppose you need to be nearby for the Tour. Once the Tour has gone through, I would head further south into the upper valley of the Dordogne, or down to the Lot.

Interestingly we've discovered that we can combine a day watching the Tour from near our village house in France on the 13th, with the following day being Bastille Day watching the fireworks in Carcassonne!

We have decided to book a few nights at the municipal at limoges. This will allow hubby to see tour de france arriving at Limoges and setting off next day. We will fit in Oradour sur glane and then move on depending on weather where we go. Either Dordoigne or Royan area.
We hv 19 days in all so just gonna follow the sun hopefully before heading back to Caen.
Witb Tour de france and football on, just hoping we wont have trouble getting in to sites without booking!
Thanks for all input.
Regards
Milly

Hi, we did this area last year and stayed here, Castel Le Chateau De Leychoisier
It's a really lovely place. We also did Oradour, we went first thing in the morning and it was very quiet and we came out around 3pm in the afternoon. It is very good and worth going to experience.

When I visited oradour on my motorbike, with my tent, I stopped at this camp site. montreal
We didn't book it just rocked up in the evening and they had some space. There were caravans there and also permanently pitched tent type buildings for hire.
It was next to a lake with good wash rooms etc. When we arrived we didn't have any food and it was too late to find a shop. The people at the bar opened the kitchen and cooked us some pizzas. It was about 30 min from oradour. Well worth seeing oradour it's truly haunting. It's good they kept it as a monument.

We had ridden up from the tarn gorges and Millau viaduct in the afternoon but started down near carcassonne.

Strangely I am working in Adrier near Limoges next week and driving down in one hit.
