We've been there! We found it very busy - too busy for us and that was 'out of season' so we moved on (quickly) to lake majiory and found it much better. But remember - this post is from an old f##t!

We've stayed at Lake Garda twice, the first at Del Garda just outside Peschiera. An easy walk along the lakeside into the village with good places to eat. Easy to drive up the eastern side of the lake but traffic is heavy especially through villages but it is scenic and we were in no hurry. We didn't swim in the lake here as it flows out into a river and didn't look so clear but further up the lake there were plenty of places to stop for a swim. Last year we stayed on the western side at Weekend campsite near San Felice deal Benaco. Enjoyed it here just as much and again went swimming in the lake. It was crystal clear and not as cold as we expected, very pleasant actually. Yes it is busy but so many places to visit, the cable car up to Monte Baldo at Malcesine is worth it for the views.

The water's only cold when you first get in there lol. Obviously it depends when you go but in the height of summer it should be quite pleasant when you've been in for a couple of minutes. The north eastern tip of the Sirmione peninsula has a natural hot spring rising from the lake bed so the water is much warmer there, although it does tend to be cloudy because of the sulphur content.

A few years back we went to Lake Garda in June. I can't remember the site, but it was about half way between Garda and Bardolino, with a pleasant walk along the lake path to both.

Pitches were quite tight, even with the fairly small caravan we had in those days. I believe that Italian pitches are quite small generally, especially for those of us used to France.

For the first week the site was heaving with German families and we thought it might have been a school holiday. As others have said the roads were very busy. However, we were within walking distance of the ferries which criss cross the lake and make for some lovely trips out.

My other half swam in the lake every day and loved it.

A very beautiful area well worth a visit. As are other lakes. My daughter was married at Lake Orta in 2015 and that is a much quieter, but equally beautiful part of the Italian Lakes.

We have stayed at Bella Italia. Its a good quality campsite and the pitches are not a bad size but as has been said it can be very busy and we had to wait for a pitch. If you can travel outside of the main UK school holidays the key is to check when the German school holidays are and avoid them as they descend on the area as its so near for them.

JoannaLesley, the site you stayed at sounds like Camping Serenella, where we stayed one Sept. My review is on here.

We've stayed in a static at Bella Italia in June and found it very noisy and busy. It was in UK term Time and the majority of holidaymakers were Irish rather than German. The camping areas did seem to be a lot quieter and relaxed than around the statics.

We did swim in the lake which was pleasant especially as it was very hot when we were there. We spent most days on boats that go round the lake as it was too hot to do much else!

We stayed at Camping Baia Verde in Manerba del Garda, nice site, big pitches. Not on lake edge, but easy walk down to it. Beach and cafe/restaurants. We really enjoyed staying there.

We have stayed a number of times at La Quercia near Lazise, though the last time was in 2007. It is a fabulous area but as everyone else has said, in high season it is unbelievably busy on the roads throughout most of the day. The near proximity of Caneva Water Park and Gardaland seem to turn the roads into a near car park for most of the morning and then again in the later afternoon. As a site we always found La Quercia excellent with loads of amenities and activities available and good supermarket, restaurant facilities, etc (though as noted previously the pitches are not very big). The major downside was the expense: back in 2007 for 2 adults and three young children (eldest 7 at that time) it worked out around 80 per night for just a simple pitch with electricity (no taps, drainage, etc). That included having at least 2 of the kids going free and the eldest on a reduced rate.
The lake is okay to swim in but most guests at the campsite favoured the big water complex on site.

Hi Steve, we have been for the past 2 years in September staying at Weekend Camping with the C & CC summer mee, which is walking distance to Salo. The campsite is really good and the bar is not overly expensive.
We have paid 16 a night through the C & CC for the meet.
We swam in the lake, (Walking Distance) and it was cleanish and not too cold.
from the site you can walk out the back gate and walk down to where the ferry pier is and you can travel the whole lake(Time limited) or you can walk into Salo where there are lots of places to eat and drink.
We will be going back again this year same meet same dates. I cannot recommend this meet enough.

One thing I will say about Weekend campsite is the back exit from the campsite is down a very steep stony path. It didn't cause us a problem but may be hard going if you have young children. It was a pleasant walk along the lake side into Salo (about 40mins) although a short piece at the start was along pavement. We stayed with Eurocamp and had a great pitch at the bottom of the site with views out across the lake. The touring spaces were further up and not all had views and some were cramped. The restaurant was great and very reasonable.

We have used Camping Cisano and La Rocca (closer to Bardolino). Both decent sites. Misano has quite small pitches. La Rocca has some 'super' pitches which are much larger than standard - car/van /awning and ample space for outside table and chairs.
Both have direct access to lakeside path, decent little supermarkets and restaurants on site and pools. We have only been In April when the traffic wasn't too bad apart from the actual easter weekend, Both sites were busy.

WE have also stayed at Cisano but again it depend when you arrive. We didn't have much choice of pitch and where we were pitched would have been unsuitable for our motorhome. Pitches on the other side of the road, nearer the lake were better but you can guess who had the choice of these, beach towels come to mind!!!
