Just weighing up our options for the summer. We have been invited to Morzine but would like to combine it with a holiday in France in the caravan. But don't want to have to tow the caravan all the way to Morzine.

Ideally, we would take the caravan and 'leave' it set up on a site somewhere, preferably a municipal one, head off to Morzine for a few days and then come back to the caravan to continue the holiday.

Is that even possible?

Look for "garage mort" facilities on the campsite's tarif.

Whilst at one time I would have said 'Great idea'..... unfortunately our caravan was broken into whilst left unattended for just one night, on a small municipal site, in a small out of the way village in the Aude. A very strange selection of things were stolen - the awning canvas but not the poles, the hoover but without the hose and tools, the step and the hook-up cable, all my toiletries, sheets and pillow cases, and a whole lot of other stuff. None of it was 'sentimental value' so it's all be replaced but these days we don't leave it unattended. It would be safe in proper storage somewhere in a compound, with insurance, and a live-on-site owner.

We left our caravan for a week in 2017 at a small site near Trebes whilst we took a boat journey with friends on the canal du midi.
We emailed the site and asked if we could do this and as he lived on site he gave us a pitch near his house so he could keep an eye on our caravan. It was perfectly fine when we returned so I suppose if you found a similar site where the owner actually lived onsite you would be ok.

Generally sites don't like you doing this as if something happens your van while you're away (eg fire) they have no way of easily getting in to the van. It might be an insurance thing iirc.

As Val says you're looking for a secure lockup.

Personally I'd either just take it with me or use a mobile home for the rest of the holiday and save on the caravan crossing and petrol.

We have left a rig (F/C) set up in a campsite in Spain for three nights, whilst we drove elsewhere and stayed a couple of nights.

It wasn't a municipal, and had the usual locked entrance for night-time security.

We told the owners, and those on either side of us ... nothing was amiss when we returned.

Might have been luck ... we'll never know.

Not sure if I'd risk it on a municipal ... unless one with good security and on site management.

I have left ours unattended (Garage Mort)for a week every year for the last 5 years as we tend to rent a Gite for a week or so during our stay.
I have left it at Sable Sur Sarthe municipal most times it has a card operated barrier and the police seem to visit most days, there are a few French vans that are left there all season and as far as I am aware there have never been any problems.

We've left ours unattended for a week on a large site in Spain (Vilanova Park), having checked it was OK with the camp site. Also done it for a few nights on a small site in Greece. No problems either time.
