I have diabetes and that is accepted by N/Wide but I don't have any cardio vascular problems.

I would be interested if its a new thing or maybe an advisor not fully informed, she did check with someone else in the back ground which is when she stated they were a low risk insurance company and they consider stents high risk and would not cover them or cardio because of them.

Would explain why my last quote for TI was 580.00, looks like I will be relying on the GHIC card

It seems Saxo the stents were the problem she told me they would have covered me for an extra charge for the bypass and diabetes even the declared small TIA but the stents were a no no

So did you pay extra to be covered Jim or are you covered for cardio at all or is it excluded the women I spoke to seemed very professional on all her answers and vey clear.
I could have travel insurance with them just the cardio vascular excluded incidentally I have just had the same response from Travel for you even though I pointed out the bypass was to correct the blocked stents and I have had very few problems since, and the ops were 20 years ago.

God knows what they would say if I told them back then the docs gave me 3 to 5 years so can't complain its allowed me to see all my kids married and see 4 grandkids

I am now going to rely on the GHIC card for EU. Spain is not a problem being married to A Spanish national I'm covered medically

Hi, Last year when it looked like a trip abroad might be possible I rang UK insurance.
My experience was that staff are working form home and, in my case, may give inaccurate advice due to a lack of colleagues to consult with.

When I questioned what I was being told I was put on hold while he inquired, he later explained this was due to home working and he had to eamil his line manager, and then said he had been wrong and my interpretation was correct.

Had I taken what he said as being correct I could have traveled but not been covered for some aspect.

I firmly believe in speaking to people, rather than emails, when you need to confirm something but, at the moment, an email may be a good idea, at least as a back up.

Thats what I was thinking has possible happened think I may try them again later maybe go into branch when things get a bit easier not going to let it bother me to much I'm quite happy to go uninsured as I posted before camper insurance covers repatriation of vehicle and driver, house insurance covers luggage etc and GHIC covers all illness including previous conditions as long as I don't travel against Dr advice.

Sorry, I have only just seen this query

I declared the stent, (fitted 2007), told them that I have had NO after effects, but the person said it stll had to be recorded as a pre existing condition, so I'm assuming I pay extra for it.

We have, in the past, compared the NW with other insurers, but NW still wins out.

High Jim
In the end I haven't taken the insurance as the lady was adamant they would not cover any cardio vascular or what they considered associated problems due to the stents, but would give me travel insurance not covering that and there still would have been an extra charge
(it is possible this is because we were changing from a flexi account to a flexi plus so would have been a new account)
its also possible the lady is working from home and got it wrong so if I were you I would ask NW insurance if you are covered for the cardio vascular now you've declared it or have they excluded it.

This is not just NW I now have two ins companies refuse to cover cardio due to stents admittedly these are cheaper companies, I can still get cover with cover cloud but its very expensive nearly 700 this years quote and only 55 days on one trip, it was 31 days again extra to get 55 hence the reasons given in my previous post about what these companies are actually risking being as your EHIC or GHIC covers you which is why their first T & C says you must have one.
these cards also cover hospital admissions even for pre existing problems.

Just as a matter of interest I have worked out my ins cost for the last twenty years it comes to just under 8000.pounds wife included but her part is only 22 a year obviously cheaper when we started 20 years ago

I think its only fair I point out I am NOT advocating people don't cover themselves with insurance only that they make sure what they are covered for.

My circumstances are such that between my wife and I we speak French and Spanish fluently we have family in France, Spain and Germany and some very good friends in Italy so we would never be in a situation where I or the wife would be coping on our own with any disaster

I just discovered the insurance premium for a single trip to US and Canada next year would cost more than a year's fee for a FlexPlus account at 13 GBP a month!

I am likely to upgrade my FlexAccount that comes with UK and EU travel insurance to a FlexPlus account in time for this US and Canada trip, as I could do it easily via online banking.

see above DK make sure if you have any ongoing illnes they will cover it in my case they will cover me for everything for an extra payment which was still cheaper than else where but would not cover cardio or previous strokes because I originally had stents, on here people have said they are covered for this but after many phone calls back and forwards to their insurers I ended up with them saying no one is covered for cardio if they have stents we don't do it.

So have to say very confused

Will do!

The over 180 GBP quote I obtained included cover for Type 2 Diabetes.

Based on one of saxo's previous comments, I believe it will be covered without any additional premium. Hopefully this is still the case when I switch my account.

When I renew my ins I have several ongoing problems Diabetes/blood pressure/Gastric reflux and Osteoarthritis as well as the over 80 supplement.
that doesn't mean the diabetic cover is free but is included in the price for my package.
Even so it works out at a fraction of what I have been quoted elsewhere just for 2 weeks in the USA and it also covers vehicle cover in the UK and the EU plus other benefits.

Thanks for that.

Hopefully they will cover me for being a Type 2 Diabetic that is controlled on medications and diet without any other medical conditions.

I must admit I have always thought you were younger by at least 10y+ from your posts!

We have NW Flexplus insurance.

They will seek additional premiums if you have a condition on their list that needs regular medication.

As we are both over 70 and both have health problems including high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, GERD and COPD (between us) AND we extend the cover from the standard 30 to to 50 nights in Europe our additional payment is quite high at about 380 for the two of us (not each). It seems to very much go on how many drugs you are on for each condition and any hospital admissions in the last 2 years. As with all insurance it pays to be honest.

Even though this is quite steep it was still cheaper than we were quoted elsewhere for annual cover, though I check this every year. Bearing in mind that you also get vehicle breakdown including the van, for the UK and Europe, which we have had to use and found very good, it's still worthwhile paying the 13 a month
