If like me, you pay a hefty supplement to NW for the Flex Plus Travel Ins, do you intend to continue with the policy even if you may not get abroad this year.

I had phoned UKinsurance who run the Nationwide scheme and was told that I should hold off renewing until I knew when I was going away.
The renewal quote would be valid for 6 months

If I had no intention of going abroad this year I would close my flex plus account and consider if there were a better account that I didn't have to pay for, however I am hoping to go abroad so I shall do nothing this year.
If you put aside what you save by closing the account and saving the travel excess you would probably have more than enough to pay for insurance if needed in the future.

I don't but the risk with cancelling any existing deal of this nature is that it may not be available if/when you want it again.

Maybe see what a couple of other companies would charge for the level of cover you're getting and use that to help you decide.

My wife pays an "excess" on our Nationwide policy. When she recently received a letter from the underwriters advising that the premium was due she contacted them to advise of some changes. They advised not to renew until we have booked a holiday.

Is the supplement you mention an age related thing because my travel insurance is just part of my Flex Plus account, I don`t pay anything on top of the standard monthly fee. I have always felt the monthly fee was worth it for the breakdown cover alone for my car and MH.

£50 over 70 supplement
Plus £190 extra for pre existing conditions... nothing too serious.
Normally , in total i pay £400. We get breakdown cover for 2 cars, including 2X 5 weeks in Europe with caravan. Travel insurance for both of us for the caravan trips plus a couple of others.
If we don’t away to Europe, I will be paying £400 for the Breakdown cover.
If we are allowed we will be off to France for 5 weeks in September.
Travel insurance comparison sites quote £400 ish just for a single trip.

Last time I spoke to Nationwide (early 2020?), they said I didn't need to add the "extras" until we were going to travel, but then they would only be valid till the end of the year, rather than for a full 12 months (not a problem). Probably worth asking the question.

I was told a week or two back to wait to pay the premium until we travel and in the meantime everything is covered except what we pay the premium for, if that makes sense!

I was thinking the same thing, this is not a ‘stand alone’ insurance but part of the Flex Plus account benefits.
We have a Flex Plus account but did not renew the ‘extras’-age supplement and pre existing conditions-last year and friends who have a policy had money paid for ‘extras’ had it refunded.

We didn’t bother with the age premium for my husband last year as when it was due there was a lot of doubt that we would get to France and we didn’t so I am glad we didn’t pay it. Again, this year we are hopeful that we will get to France but are still not totally convinced it will happen so I don’t plan to pay the age extension or my preexisting conditions extension until we are absolutely sure we are going to France.

Due to a close family member getting married in Germany in the spring I phoned   Nationwide to find out what cancellation/additional expenses cover might still be in place in case of Covid 19.

It was made clear to me that from 1st January this year Nationwide will not offer any cover for any cancellation or additional costs that might be incurred due to Covid 19 in the future.

I think I need to now look for alternatives, both insurance wise and banking wise. The main reason I have a FlexPlus account is for the travel insurance.

Hi, I received, as I presume you did, an email notifying me of the changes and subsequently looked at the info on their website.
It appears to me that the main change is the loss of cover if you cancel due to COVID-19, you have it or are isolating etc, but once on holiday you are covered.

I have seen a few threads relating to this and it seems unclear what people expect when they talk about cover for Covid-19 but think now we know that the EHIC is still valid that will have reassured many.

We hope to be able to travel this year but it won’t be till after we are vaccinated and at that point I will pay the age and any other supplements.

Should say that I phoned last year to check on cover and was given what appeared to me incorrect information.
When I questioned this the guy explained he was working form home and would have to email his supervisor to check.

He then apologised and confirmed my understanding was correct.
So, I would rather go with the website for info at the moment as it seemed that was all the guy on the phone was doing, albeit then interpreting it incorrectly.

I spoke to Nationwide (UK Insurance ) yesterday and was told i should not pay any supplements, and let theTravel part lapse.
If we decide to travel later in the year we can contact them and re instate the Travel Policy.
We went to France/ Spain in Sept/ Oct, because we were in our Caravan the NW Cover changes wouldn’t really affect us.
We had paid for nothing in advance, except Eurotunnel, which could easily be amended.
If our return was delayed through Coved NW would not cover accommodation costs, which was ok because we had our accommodation with us.
We were assured, via email, that we had full medical and repatriation cover.
If we are allowed, and feel it is safe then we will be off again in September.
However, I would be cautious if holiday involved pre booked flights and accommodation..
