There is a petition to the UK Government for the Pet Passport to be brought back. At the moment we're required to have our vet complete a form similar to those which are used for 'livestock' being exported!

Link to the petition for bringing back the Pet Passport

Please pass this link on to any of your friends who travel with their pets.

Thank you for this, Val. I have shared via my Facebook page.

No separate form that I'm aware of, will need to look through all the pages of the AHC.

You can use, if you still have it, the old Pet Passport for coming back. Ironic isn't it!

Just spoke to a very nice lady at DEFRA and she said that there is a part on the AHC that the EU vet has to fill in for the tapeworm treatment and examination on return

Hi bofs,

I see from your post that you contacted DEFRA regarding your 2 dogs with Romanian pet passports. We have 2 dogs who now have Austrian pet passports which we got when we were in Austria in 2019. Could you please let me know where you sent your enquiry and what exact questions you asked as like yourself, I would like to get some assurance that we can travel abroad again without the costly AMC.

With many thanks.

I contacted DEFRA by email, explaining that our dogs had Romanian issued passports though were now resident in the U.K. and asked whether they could travel from the U.K. to the EU and back again using these passports. They quoted the Gov. web site and said yes, as long as the passports remain valid (ie the rabies jabs etc are all up to date) and the dogs meet all other requirements (microchip etc).
This is the latest official guidance stating specifically that you can use EU issued passports

Going back to quarantine costs, we had two cats in quarantine kennels for 6 months. The charge was £1800 for each cat (i.e. £10 per day). And that was in 1997!! Dread to think what the cost would be now.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I have now e-mailed DEFRA concerning the Austrian pet passports (just to be belt and braces). I have also asked for clarification as to when their repeat Rabies vaccinations become due, that it will be acceptable for our UK vet to complete this on the Austrian pet passports. I can't see that it would be problematic, but I am just trying to cover all bases as these passports could save us a considerable amount of money in not having to obtain an Animal Health Certificate each time we travel to the EU zone.

Here's hoping that we can get to travel without having to self-isolate on return home in the not too distant future.

We were told that passport issued in France meant the dog had to have Rabies and their normal yearly booster in France.

Have yet to completely check that out.

I have just received a response to my DEFRA enquiry and very impressed by the quick reply which is:

"I can confirm that if your pet has a valid EU pet passport then an AHC is not required and they can travel between the UK and EU using this.

UK vets can no longer enter anything into EU pet passports apart from the tapeworm treatment and the clinical examination sections. If your pets rabies vaccination is due to expire then it can be administered by a UK vet however they can’t enter this into the pet passport and an AHC will have to be issued on this occasion. You can then get your vet in the EU to update this in the pet passport if they are happy to do so."

Just thought this would be of interest to everyone. I would also add that when we talked to our Austrian vet, she said that she had no concerns with the UK and saw far more problems coming across the border into Austria from other EU countries.

I going to pick up on something DEFRA has told you Sara.

When we went to get the AHC we took the dogs passports with us, one of the dogs had a rabies booster in March which he duly updated in passport and told us the other one was due a booster at the end of the year and to bring his passport at that time.

All in all confusing times, but will try and get some clarity on the way back, but we are going to a new for us vet and they speak no English as so something might be lost in translation.

Mr Blueexpo, where do you have to show the AHC now, I'm presuming there must be a new facility at the Folkestone end?

New smallish pet reception next to the main terminal entrance.

This is the entrance at the main car park not the caravan / motor home car park.

Hi Bluexpo97. Thanks for your response and I shall be very interested to hear how you get on. I have just signed the following petition:

"Create a national system to provide animal health certificates at a fixed cost

Create a national system, recognised by the EU, to replace the AHC which is not required for each time you wish to travel to the EU. For so many families the costs involved as well as the administration is not feasible. Vets have also expressed how complicated the current AHC paperwork is."

The link is below
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/568802

Thought this might be of interest to contributors.

Our vet completed our pet passport, and in conversation said that it was worse, and more complicated than the paperwork require pre-pet-passport!

The one thing I would say is that if your pet has an EU passport, apparently entry to France is being refused if updates to vaccinations have been done in the UK post 01/01/2021 and entered into the EU passport by a UK vet. I can't confirm this from personal experience, just passing it on from another (reliable) source.
