We're off to the South of France shortly; when we last went we travelled through Rouen on the A28, over Pont Mathilde and then immediately right off onto the D18, before joining the A13 south of Rouen.

We've not done the route since 2017, so just thought I'd double check, and Google maps won't let me plot that route. It tries to take us via two alternatives, neither of which are as straightforward as the Pont Mathilde. It won't let me drag/adjust the route via the PM either.

Does anyone know if there's a long term problem using the Pont Mathilde?

Many thanks.

Looking it up online - there are road works from 2nd to mid June and there will be issues from 1/7 to 29/8 with 6 lanes being reduced down to 3. Most of the work will be done at night from 1/7 but they're still predicting queues. Might be best avoided.

TomTom routes you across the bridge OK as primary route (start and finish are only for demo purposes), and it's set as car and caravan as the vehicle: https://mydrive.tomtom.com/en_gb/#mode=routes+viewport=49.42587,1.10416,9,0,-0+rou........

There are as mentioned above, roadworks on the bridge which may impact your travels at some times: https://www.paris-normandie.fr/id312266/article/2022-06-02/des-travaux-sur-le-pont........

Variations are possible but it depends where you are starting from -Calais or Caen - and where you are making for -Le Mans or Chartres.

Thanks all...

We're starting at Calais, and heading for Chartres. Have got an overnight near Dreux, then on down to the A10.

I should have realised it would be roadworks. Was confused as Google said 'no' but Michelin said 'yes'.

Thanks for the info people; I'll check our dates and may look at the alternatives. I know we had to use an alternative a few years back after a lorry fire, just got to figure out which Pont it was now 😆.

Thanks again.

See what your satnav says about possible congestion on the day, but an alternative is to approach Rouen from the north on the A151 instead of the A28. That takes you across the river on the Pont Gustave Flaubert instead of the Pont Matthilde..But it’s a modern lifting bridge so make sure they haven’t raised it to let a ship through.

If you are heading to Chartres the best route is to go through the big tunnel on the approach to Rouen and then head for Pont de L`Arche ( from memory it is the 3rd exit after the tunnel). It is the D6015 and takes you down the eastern side of the river, stay on the 6015 to Pont de L`Arche and then follow the signs for Evreux. Many on here have used this route for years, it is very easy.

We always use the Pont de L’Arche route from Rouen and usually overnight at the municipal site.

If you are really worried, why not use Pont de Brantonne

Just shows the importance of personal experience....

I looked at the 6015 route and it seemed a real pain to get down to...we used the route through Yvetot before but I couldn't remember how to get down there either....memory of a goldfish unfortunately.

I'm grateful for your help; I think it will be the 6015.

Just a quick word of thanks to you jolly helpful people.
We used the 6015 route round Rouen, and it was the most stress free trip round there in the 8 or so times we've done the journey.
Making our way back up this weekend, and it's the least concerning part of the journey.
Thanks again for your advice and comments.

Glad you used and appreciated that route, it is so much easier than any other route to head toward Chartres.

I think Rouen now has a low emissions zone, if so you will need the air critique sticker.

Yes you are right Barry. Rouen is now a permanent sticker zone. Look at the map on the green zones app & you will see the main ring road to the right of the river is exempt. So you can drive along A28 & around ring without sticker but if you want to use route where coming from Calais you go off just before bridge & go down left side of river then it looks like you need to display sticker.
