One of the CC's biggest strengths for members is there no minimum night booking over busy periods, (for me anyway). We were going to try a private site recommended to us but they want 5 nights over the jubilee weekend. 5 nights! Ludicrous. We're still going to a private site as we're with friends in a tent but we're going back to Masham where it is a reasonable 3 night stay. I say it is a strength of the club as it does not dictate to members how many nights they have to stay, not everyone will have the whole weekend available on a bank holiday. And I don't see why people should have to pay for nights they can't use just to get away on a bank holiday weekend.

I see what you mean but that means you are taking up a pitch for 3 nights when others could have used it for 5. Can't say I blame the private site, particularly as it is the Jubilee weekend and demand is at its highest.

The reverse situation occurs when people book Friday and Saturday nights only. This means that those of us who like to book for a week can't. This stops the clubs  getting bookings during the week. I would like to see a minimum booking of 3 nights at weekends but it won't happen.

Ok, clearly my rant on Friday has touched a few nerves, and firstly i would like to say that I was in no way complaining about people who cancel for genuine reasons what ever they may be, My point was more directed at the people who will book a seaside campsite on the off chance it will be nice weather, only to cancel at the last minute when the weather changes.

with regards to not having to cancel the trip, I was looking at Brighton - there are hardly any campsites that have any good reviews that near to brighton, I have 2 young children and so facilities that the CC provide are a must for us (well not a must we could cope, but it woudl be nicer and less stress!)

The CC has tightened up cancellation rules a bit, but I can see their difficulties in trying to please everyone.   For many members the times when they can get away will vary tremendously, and how individuals pre-plan their breaks (some book several periods in advance, knowing they don't intend to attend all of them; but others book in the same manner and do turn up).  I don't know how that could be effectively changed.

We had a mishap with our van at the end of last season, there was a delay in getting some bits, and it is still at the repairers.  We have a new van due at the end of March.  So we have booked a week in April at a CC site, because we know it can be cancelled if things beyond our control prevent us from going.  The private sites we visit demand non-returnable deposits, so we won't book any of those until we have the new van.  At this late stage we may be unlucky.   Therefore, instead of booking our usual May-June French holiday, this year we will make it end of August into October.

We can't really blame the system or other campers because we were unable to plan well before.  It's a case of fitting in as and where we can.  Being retired, we can at least book a few CC sites out of peak periods if we go on an "arrive Monday-leave Friday" basis.

Bertie.

A lot of these private sites insist on all the money upfront. To be honest I dont like the idea of my very hard earned weeks/months in advance. So I dont use private big sites, I believe that when you send a deposit you are entering a contract if you break that contract then you lose your deposit no matter the circumstances.

you never will please everyone with this system , or any other system.someone will always disagree with the way its done.the topic has been done to death on this and other forums for years now .
accept it for what it is , if you cant get on a particular site go elsewhere , if you dont like the way the club run the booking system , dont join..simple.
far more important things in life to worry about than getting on a cc site on a particular weekend.

They should adopt the same policy as the C&CC and take deposits for bookings, I know people have genuine reasons for cancelling but people also book weekends they dont need then cancel at the last minute if the weather isnt good!  The CC have adopted their new policy that sites have to be cancelled within 72 hours, if members break the rules twice then they are not allowed to make future bookings for 14 days and any further bookings are cancelled. What planet are the CC on??? That is not going to deter anyone from block booking, when you book alot of commercial sites they now ask for full payment up front at the time of booking, so CC has the advantage of not even asking for a deposit. I have been a CC member for years and join because I use the network of CLs, rarley have I used CC sites because I find them expensive at peak times and they are always booked up! However, I am also a member of the C&CC and I have always managed to get onto a site - is this because they take a 25 deposit at the point of booking??? I think so!  I would try more CLs if I were you they are fab and very cheap too.

Taking deposits would not have ny effect, all it would do wouldbe to the group of people who are disatisfied. Until the Supply demand equation s balanced the iteswill remain fully booked. As far as the clubis concerned having very nearly full sites most of the time is a better ecomonic proposition than keeping a minority section of club members happy. There evidence was clear, when they stopped taking deposits, bookings increased, site usage increased and no shows fell in number. These statistics are to me very peruasive.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Just to add my two`pennorth if I can, (everything I`ve posted in the last week or so has been deleted for some reason and no one can tell me why), One of the other nice things about about the CC system has always been the ability to leave a site early without losing all your payment.

For instance a few years ago we booked a fortnight at Sheepcote Valley in Brighton, but really didn`t like the area at all and managed to find a pitch at Houghton Mill for the second week, so moved on. I know a lot of people may think that I should forfeit my fees if I chose to leave early, but at the end of the day the CC didn`t lose out financially, I was still only using one pitch of the thousands on the network so I wasn`t depriving anyone of the ability to use their van, and most importantly (for us) we were able to actually able to re-locate to somewhere where we could enjoy our limited free time instead of thinking "what a waste of a fortnights holiday".

I can't believe Johnks said people who book for 3 nights are stopping people booking for 5!! Seriously where's the rule that says people who can camp for the longest time get the pitch?? If we only have 3 nights to camp why should we not go for 3?

I didn't say that at all. I just made the point that weekend campers do stop those of us who would like to book for a week for doing just that!

Perhaps a certain number of pitches could be reserved for weekend campers. Everyone is entitled to book as long as they like but it still doesn't change the fact that I can only often book from Monday to Friday!

That's the thing though, they don't "all" sit around comparing, they "curtain twitch", nothing social about it.

What gets me is this obsession with facilities & the people who claim NO independent sites can come close to club sites.
Now that is a ridiculous statement to make. For a start what facilities do you actually NEED? & surely as long as they are clean & functional then they're OK. Just because they're not diamond encrusted gold taps on the sinks doesn't make the site a slum.

There seems to be an awful lot of snobbery from a lot of members on here with regards to club sites versus independent sites.

I'll tell you what magsruby I think we must be twins sepparated at birth, Couldn't agree with you more and I think the very forcefull indignent replies probably prove we're right.

Caravan club sites are littered with people who are more concerned with how new, or expensive their caravan is and how clean their 4x4 is than they are about getting out and seeing the area they have supposedly gone to visit. let me tell you all something there are private sites out there that charge far less than "the club" and have better facillities. And anyhow if its got a loo and a shower thats reasonably clean who cares. You spend 20 mins a day in there having a couple of showers etc, I'm there for the great outdoors and admittedly a decent pint in a local pub.

Club sites have minimum standards that they all meet or exceed, they are nice< but don't be fooled into thinking they are the be all and end all.

Johnks I've read your post and it clearly states that I would be taking a pitch for 3 nights when someone could have it for 5. But I can only have 3 nights so I feel I should be as free to book it as someone who can have 5 is. First come first served. Not selfish in any way. Now I agree there must be nothing more annoying when you want to book a week and you can't because the weekend is booked. And a site having some weekends free may or may not be a solution. I actually think the private site was being rather greedy, Just because it is the Diamond Jubilee we don't all have 5 days to use. Other sites are not asking for 5, just the usual 3. It may have actually put people off, it did me, I took my business elsewhere!

There is no doubt that the CC booking system encourages less flexibility and people just get organised and book all of their planned holidays/weekends in one go. Some of the most popular sites will not have a free weekend until November! We find though by ringing the site on a Thursday or Friday morning you can usually get in. Just have to be ready to get off. This obviously doesn't suit people who want to more spontaneous. We use a mixture of CC sites and private. If a private doesn't meet your standards you just find another. I managed to book all of my 1st choices on booking day, including a site for the Olympics.
