The law is about flags on boats. Theoretically the union flag is a royal flag and not a national one!
"Back in the 17th Century, wily seamen were using the flag to avoid paying harbour duties - a privilege restricted to naval ships at the time. So James' successor, Charles I, ordered it be restricted to His Majesty's ships "upon pain of Our high displeasure".

Those restrictions remain, and today it is a criminal offence to fly the union jack from a boat."

The flag commonly referred to as the "Union Jack" is actually the "Union Flag". It only becomes the Union Jack when flown from a ship. (jack is sailor speak for a flag, and it is flown from a jackstaff)

I fly a Saltire for me and a Lithuanian tricoleur for the wife. Saltire goes up highest. I got small flags as I don't want to overload the whip pole.

We have a "3 peas in a pod" thing to represent our kids. Always wondered how to put a flag on there as well, cable ties it is!!

To be fair, we haven't taken the flagpole away for a long while now due to already having enough jobs to do when arriving at and leaving site. We normally just hang the peapods on the awning corner. The kids have never struggled to find their way back to our 'van, with or without flagpole.

I like the idea of flags and lights and personal stuff, it makes a site more interesting to walk around. Sometimes people can go a bit silly with it but that's (IMO) surely better than line after line of pristine, identical, nondescript white boxes. We are all individuals after all! Aren't we?

In reply to the OP, keep looking and you'll find something that represents you. If you can't find anything suitable, make something!!

I think its a boy's toy thing, it is in our van anyway! We have one, a Yorkshire rose. I have no idea why, we have no young kids. But OH loves it, for reasons that totally escape me.

Sorry - I'm sure it's just me, but what is the point of these flags ???

Isn't there enough to take away / setup without messing about with a flag ?

Sorry - just doesn't do it for me !

It's not just you, i don't get the flag thing either

Jon

Me either, whats the point?

we have flag pole and also solar lights upon it, - reason we do it was after a 10 day stay on a very large site and two 'youngish' kids they could find our unit on the way back from the swings..... also my brother came to visit for the day- easier to say 'look for the flag with a swan on it' ( buckinghamshire county flag ) rather than we are on pitch number 237

the solar lights are just a bit of fun, they charge during the day and light up at night....

as for fixing the flag pole then you can buy a ground post, ( simply a giant tent peg that has a clamp and tube at the top that you slot the flag pole into) - perfect !

Got back from are four nights away at steam rally and now have a 6 metre flag pole and are county flag!

I have never seen so many caravans as what was at this rally campsite.
When walking back to caravan the only way we could find are way back was using other peoples flags to navigate.
So while walking round we found a stall selling the flag poles and they had a northampton county flag so we decided to purchase one.
They had many diffrent sized poles but we went for a 6 metre as are van is small we didnt want to go too big.
