Hi caravanners

We're looking to buy a used caravan and with 2 young kids we've decided we really like the 5 berth double dinette layout with the centre toilet and rear dinette that converts to 3 beds and can be closed over at night.

Can anyone suggest older models (2005-2012) to look out for that use this layout? We need to keep below 1600kg MTPLM. Must have separate shower cubicle too.

So far I've got:

Swift Challenger 490
Bailey Olympus 525
Abbey 517 GTS

Are there any others to note?

If anyone has feedback on either of these models that would be great too!

Thanks yes I've been using that it's pretty useful. It's this layout we like most:

http://www.caravanfinder.co.uk/caravan-layouts-5berth-centerkitchen-doubledinette-01.html

But even within those results there are some that don't have a separate shower, and some don't even have a table in the rear "dinette".

My list now includes these models and would welcome any feedback on them or any further suggestions!

Swift Challenger 490
Bailey Olympus 525
Abbey 517 GTS
Bailey Provence S7

We had a Swift Challenger 490L. I think it was 2005. It had a separate shower cubicle within the toilet compartment and a small table in the rear dinette area. We were happy with the layout until we finally went for an island bed when there were only two of us.

Thanks Ronni, just so happens that since making this post this morning we have just bought a Swift Challenger 490. Found one locally in good nick and with a ton of extras so decided to go for it. Looking forward to our first outing in it!

The double dinette layout was very popular but was replaced quite a while ago by rear bunks with a single dinette giving the 5th bed. This meant the bunk dweller didn't have to climb over the double below.

The rear double was usually only 4 foot wide and the bunks which came later were short so only suitable for young children.

We only had the side single dinette with bunk over and end wash room which we found worked very well. We could draw a curtain round them. The end washroom was excellent and provided a vey useful place for Mum or Dad to get dressed etc.

Thanks navver I've seen the newer bunk/dinette layout but couldn't find one within our price/weight where you can actually close off that section of the van in the evening once the kids are in bed.

I think the double dinette will work very well for us at least for a few years. I see what you mean about access to the upper bunk though. I noticed in the older vans (maybe pre-2006 ish) the rear area was very short like you said, however the more recent vans this seems to be longer so we hope the two rear seats can be used as single beds while the kids are young. (Edit: and hence access to the bunk is still possible)

As has been stated the once popular twin dinette fell out of favour some years ago, and even post 2005 there are not many to be found. By specifying a separate shower cubicle your search becomes even more difficult as most 5 berths with this layout had fairly compact washrooms to maximise the living space.

(I've just noticed that you've found a Swift Challenger 490. Enjoy your van.)

Enjoy your new van. We have a Lunar Quasar 525 double dinette and love the layout. Use the front as lounge/ single beds and keep rear as dining area when there are the 2 of us. Otherwise sleep 6 when daughter and 3 children join us by sleeping 3 in the large front double. Shame the layout seems to have lost popularity.

We have an elderly Compass Kensington - probably too old for your needs. It suits us as we can place a standard double mattress over the dinette at the back and use it as a fixed bed. As there is only the 2 of us (plus 2 dogs) we don't have to flaff around making up a bed every night.

Thanks everyone! Rainbowsend the Lunar Quasar 525 looks great and is an almost identical layout to the Swift Challenger 490 that we have bought.

I really don't understand why this layout has lost popularity - in my mind it is the most versatile layout and if you want a fixed bed you can just leave the rear bed made up.

Sadly we noticed that even the Bailey Pursuit 560-5 has changed this year from a rear dinette to a rear washroom with bunks. I wonder if anyone is still actually making lightweight rear dinette 5 berth vans?

I don't think there is a British manufacturer that makes this layout anymore; fixed beds and bunks became more popular and the twin dinette didn't sell. There are currently very few 5 berth vans in any layout.

We have an Elddis Xplore 495 with this layout (no separate shower) and we love the versatility of the layout. It is used mainly as a 2 berth, often with a bed left up or two singles when travelling. It is also used by my daughter as a family van.

Clearly, like Rainbowsend, we are in the minority.

It sounds as if the answer is to buy "nearly new". If you look on caravanfinder there are caravans with every kind of layout and links to the dealers selling them.
