The letters stand for Certificated Locations and Certificated Sites.

CL sites are licenced by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and CSs are licenced by the Camping and Caravan Club. They are both technically members only, but I'm sure some don't stick religiously to that.

What an interesting thread.

I have always wondered how The Quiet Site near Ullswater could justify asking £35 / night for a caravan pitch but it was never an issue because I live near enough that if I want to visit that area I just drive over for the day.

But today I went and had a look at their website . . . they are now asking £50 per night.

Guess someone must be desperate enough to pay it ?

Hi mate, I did'nt realise what a can of worms I opened,. I've had a hell of a response, many pointing out the cheaper small sites HAVE NOT put up prices, where others have gone ballistic.. Its a case of supply and demand, and there will be rip off owners who dont give a dam, and will grab what they can.. The word is shop around on the internet for the best deal you can..

Just booked a small site in Lincolnshire for a couple of weeks time, was a CAMC CL, but now gone private and expanded to 16 pitches, and now taking tents as well, a reasonable £18/night with EHU, toilet and shower, AND plenty of vacant pitches!

I was becoming despondent, as wanted to book two pitches, one for my caravan and one for a mate's tent. Once I'd discounted the sites not taking tents, then the ones with silly pitch fees, then the ones with no vacancies I was running out of options!

It looks nice in the photos, the reviews are all really good, we will see in a couple of weeks if it's all as good as it looks!

I did a spot check after reading this lot. Last year we paid £17.50 pn at a place in July. Booked again this year without even checking the price (more fool me), and its now £25!
That said, they had just took over the place last year, and were in the process of investing a shed load of money into it. So, maybe the rise was always on the cards?

If I had my business decimated by Covid, and scarcely being able to take bookings for 18 months, I would put my prices up to try and recoup some of those losses with the pent-up demand we're now seeing. Similarly, I would also see it as temporary as there will be less demand next year when a chunk of that demand goes abroad with or without caravans. Same story with caravans; if you sold your unit now and kept hold of that money for 18 months, I reckon you'd get a heck of a lot more for your money when people get back to package holidays in 2022.

Katy, I donít know of any sites that have not had bookings for 18 months, they all opened again last June/July after being closed in March, they were shut from Jan until April this year. Which is pretty much when the season starts anyway.

lots of independent sites never passed on the 15% vat reduction onto the customers, so got an extra 15% for nothing along with all the other Government incentives.

I know a few people with static vans that have been well and truly shafted by the sites they are on, My BIL pays 5k a year ground rent, last year all the facilities that he pays for never restarted and he lost a few months where he couldnít use his van, All the static owners were given £150 site credit, that couldnít be used off next yearís ground rent so in effect it could only be used in the sites take away.

Hiya, hundreds of sites did not open last year, (in fact some still are not opening this year), they simply could not meet the requirements, or did not have the staff to clean or put CV secure practice in place. Yes lots of sites did open for a bit of the season, but I am sure they suffered great losses throughout 2020, as have many thousands of other businesses too.

I still personally would not pay anything over £20 for a night for me in my camper, but others will pay the inflated prices, and if the demand is there then I don't blame the sites for creating the supply after an absolutely pants 15 months of trade.

Cheers Ratty

Yes I think you are right Ratty, I don't really blame sites trying to recoup some of their losses, but I personally won't go over my budget either. I normally set it at £22 a night. Some however are a lot better off than me and don't mind paying silly money, so I just say let them get on with it.

I Agree ratty some will of been hard hit many will of done ok from it,

But to increase the site fee's by 40/50% is unforgiveable and a bit short sighted by owners i for one would never return to a site or any business that has increased it prices by that much, Could you imagine going to a pub that charged £4 a pint normally to be told its now £7/8.

Hi Bessie

I can imagine walking into a pub that did that.
And make an about turn to exit the pub as well!!!

We all know people have had a rough time over the past 18 months, whatever business they are in.

But while we are all in the Staycation period, and totally in rip of Britain, we need to do our research and support those that are not putting up prices like there is no tomorrow.
They will soon be crying when everyone goes abroad again, and they fall back to earth with a bump, and have lost there regular customers, because of greed.
Then they will have to drop there prices again, and try to regain the trust of those regular staycation customers that have always gone to those sites.

sites that charge too much wont have enough customers sites that charge too little will have too many customers..

those that dont mind paying a little more will find it easier to find pitches than those that do mind paying a little more..

i should maybe say those that can afford to pay more as opposed to those that cant but it all works out the same way in the end..

Sorry, but I can think of a couple of sites around here that didn't open at all last year.
