Hi All

I am just about to upgrade from my trusty trailer tent (Which I will be selling soon :o)) ) to a Caravan.

Does anyone have any good recomends of an insurer that are both cost effective and reliable.

Many Thanks

Simon

Hi Hitchhiker

I too have just changed to Caravan Guard and in fact will find out how good they are, as it so happens I was forced off the road at the weekend and the caravan sides were marked by trees. A bit rough on the new insurers, but such is fate.

I will report on how it evolves.

Hi Everyone

I'm new to this site, but just to let you know that we were with Caravan Guard nearly two years ago and they were excellent when we made a claim.

we have recently bought a new van and got the best quote off them so have gone with them again.

I know they have changed their underwriters, but I am sure they will continue with their good service.

I have also insured with Caravan Guard their policys are underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance. For me they were £140 cheaper than Caravan Club & Saga.

Is insurance really necessary?  If it's stored secure then why bother?

Hi Nick

I have a claim in at the present time, my van sides were scored when another vehicle forced me over, although the scoring has not punctured the skin and filling can remedy the problem the estimate is just over £1000.00. I shudder to think what it would have cost if the damage had been more extensive. I am upgrading the van and would have lost a lot of trade in value, so i am glad of insurance.

It is not a legal requirement as you have 3rd party insurance when you are hitched to your car from your motor insurance. This is only 3rd party cover even if you insure your car fully comprehensive. However should your solo caravan blow over and kill someone (worst case scenario) you would be held responsible if you have no insurance, compensation claims could run to ridiculous figures, and of course you would be liable for any damage or theft to your caravan. It is certainly advisable even if you only have third party cover should you caravan cause damage or injury due to bizarre weather, mechanical failure or accident while not being towed. (Motor mover for example)

We have just got our first caravan and have gone with Caravan Guard, I must say they are very friendly, extremely helpful and the price was very reasonable.  We also got discounts for having various security equipment (fiamma door lock, bulldog hitchlock, chain and padlock, TWO lockable posts on the drive and TWO wheelclamps).

Just insured with caravan guard.

Nobody else wanted to insure us as we are 29 (for a lot you have to be 30) and the van is to be kept at my parents house as it is more secure. The other companies wanted us to keep it at home (near a motorway junction and on one of the main roads to Appleby!! ).

Caravan guard were really helpful and flexible. They were also cheaper than all the other quotes that involved keeping it in secure storage. They have allowed my parents to be on the insurance so they can phone direct in the event they wake up one morning to an empty drive and also to make it easier for when they use it.

All in all very impressed!!
