Barnard Castle - known as "Barney" to the locals - is the nearest town to this lovely site. It is peaceful, yet close to many attractions and the industrial centres of England's north east. A haven for walkers and cyclists.

The town of Barnard Castle hosts the Teesdale Thrash on May Day Bank Holiday - a traditional extravaganza of folk song and dance.

Antiques are a speciality of the area.
