What a superb brand new site. We first stayed in our tent back in May and have just returned home after our third visit and the site just gets better. The shower rooms are brand new and kept scrupulously clean and the owners are planning more for next year.
The animals are a great attraction and there was some new born chicks that our kids held. There is a Roman Fort play area planned for next year near the cafe which our three kids will love.
The owners are very friendly and will do anything for you. A perfect quiet location, fab views and this is a hidden gem.
The Milecastle Inn is a great pub and is only half a mile up the road towards Hadrians Wall. We enjoyed the real ales and the food is superb and good value.

This is a site with great potential but desperately needs more work.
Pluses - great location and potential. Roman wall with nice walks within easy reach by car, bus or on foot. Pub - the milecastle inn served very nice food and within easy walking distance.
Haltwhistle town has a good selection of shops/pubs/takeaways and is 10 mins in car but would be a bit of a walk due to steepness of Shield Hill on way back to the site. Had an excellent breakfast at the on site cafe.
Negatives. The site really needs more toilet/shower facilities. The men's has 1 shower, 1 toilet and 1 urinal and a space saver sink all in 1 small room (with dividers). The room is so small that you cannot use the sink if someone is accessing the toilet or shower.
Also, the tent pitches towards the bottom of the site are on quite a slope - more than gentle! some pitches are better than others so get there early would be my advice!
I realise this site is being developed and I'm no stranger to 'basic' sites and in a way prefer them. However, my main objection was paying top price for what could only be described as a site with basic facilities.
I really hope the owners get the new toilet bock sorted and finish off the landscaping as it will then be excellent value and a very nice site with friendly and welcoming owners.

Just returned from here. A very warm welcome, and conversation throughout the holiday.
Good setting, inbetween the main routes in the area. Steady amount of tents, campervans, caravans throughout the stay. They also have some wigwams! (wooden lodge looking)
The toilets are all nice and clean, although the shower is hot, you need to make sure the shower curtain is in the tray as it WILL LEAK everywhere. There are a lot of plans for this site in the near future, including a launderette and better showers. It has only been open since April.
Some lovely walks, and not far from the wall or many of its attractions.
Visited Birdoswald, Roman Museum, Vindolanda, housefort (?) Haltwhistle
Visited a couple of pubs, Twice Brewed (nice) and Wallace Arms, for Sunday Roast. We had arrived at 12. 30 and the roasts had sold out! Mmmmm, not impressed I'm sad to say, but the alternative food was YUM!
Popped to Carlisle and Dumfries for a couple of days out to see some friends.
Hexham has a huge tesco, Waitrose etc. There is a launderette in Haltwhistle high street, and also a small sainsburys and pubs.
The animals there were a huge attraction for my children, alpacas, a load of hens a Cockerel, guinea pigs, rabbits, and a day before we left a couple of ducks
Would recommend and we are hoping to make a journey there next year too!

Booked this campsite online, good system as you can see exactly what is available, £24 for 2 adults/2 kids £2. 00 extra person, plus £3. 50 for hook up, not the cheapest but okay.
This campsite on first arrival is very basic, the owners very helpful and gave us all information needed (except for chemical disposal which is half way down the campsite) on the paper work given, we were informed that they have plans for a new toilet block, more wigwams and once all the landscaping is finished this will be a hard site to book on to as the views are fantastic and it is so peaceful,
My only small problem with the site is the early morning cockadoole doos from the small pen they have with chickens and Alpacas in which is in front of the hardstands, don't know if they can be heard from the tent pitches which are further down the hill, but got woke up both mornings a few times,
But apart from that the toilet blocks they have, have 2 toilets and 1 shower are clean (not sure what the mens were like), 2 wash up sinks, a cafe and small shop selling local produce (jams, chutneys etc)ice creams.
Haltwhistle is a 5min bus ride at £1. 80 adult and 80p child cheaper if you buy a return and the stop is right out side the camp,
The town itself is very small and nearly everything shuts on a Saturday afternoon, went to the outdoor pool in Haltwhistle which the kids enjoyed and was £4. 50 per child.
All in all a lovely peaceful site and we had good weather too will return.

We have just returned from this lovely site, it is a real hidden gem. The brand new hard standing pitches have just been installed with lots of room.
The Tea room was a great advantage selling anything from wonderful homemade cakes to Sunday lunch.
There was even a site BBQ on Friday night which was great when you arrive straight from work, stressed and ready to chill.
The animals Alpacas, hens, rabits and guinea pigs were a great hit with the kids. Defiantly be back

Just returned from a very enjoyable albeit rainy weekend at Herding Hill Farm.
We arrived late Friday and were greeted by Steve the owner and Richard the Warden who explained the site rules - no stress! We were rather stressed after towing in monsoon conditions, so set off down to the local pub about 10 mins away. The food was very good as were the local real ales.
The site is in a very picturesque location and is handily placed for walks along Hadrian's Wall and cycling along Route 72.
Our hard standing pitch was brand new and had lovely views down the valley. The site is evolving but is very clean with new toilet and shower facilities which are adequate for the amount of pitches.
This was our second trip in our caravan and managed to get to the site easily going via Greenhead and avoiding Shield Hill.
Overall a clean, relaxing and friendly site and will return.

What a great site this is going to be, the owners Steve and Ann are so friendly. They have great ideas for the near future. The site now is ideal for families of all ages. Steve was like the pied piper when he took the Alpacas for a stroll, all the kids were following him.
The camp site is in its early stages of development but this will not put you off. You get plenty room to pitch your tent most pitches are on a slight hill but nothing to drastic, just adds to the fun.
The area is outstanding with views for miles.
We had a lovely walk through the farm to Haltwhistle village which has everything you would need, Co op store local butchers, fruit and veg shops plenty and pubs and Clubs.
We are already planning another weekend there before the end of the summer

Made a last minute booking to this lovely little site. Owners were friendly, welcoming and helpful from start to finish. Steve's enthusiasm for the area on the phone sealed the deal as we looked for somewhere to stay so we could take a good walk along Hadrian's wall.
This is a site in progress, but what is there so far is spot on. Clean and modern showers and loos. Nice amount of space between the hard-standings that we put our camper on.
It's a peaceful location and just ten minute's walk to the pub at the bottom of the hill which serves lovely evening meals and again, has very friendly staff.
We are fans of quiet sites without clubhouses - there's enough around here in the great outdoors to entertain. We loved the chickens but missed the Alpacas, so we'll have to go back to see them.

I managed to book a Wigwam here last minute after our tent poles snapped due to the high winds the previous weekend at Hexham racecourse.
This site is still in it's early stages and therefore is work in progress but don't let this put you off. The owners Ann and Steve are very welcoming and friendly and are very hardworking, running the camp site, the Wigwams, the farm and the on-site cafe/shop.
The Wigwam was reasonably spacious with very comfy beds, full size fridge, kettle and panel heater. Outside a wooden table/bench seats.
The immediate area surrounding the two initial Wigwams has some grassy areas for the kids to play but when the grass is fully established will be better.
My 2 girls and my niece and the other kids on site had no problems keeping themselves amused. The two Alpacas are a great source of amusement, looking after the Black Rock/Silkie chickens, with guinea pigs and rabbits being added soon.
The toilet/shower block is at the back of the cafe/shop but another one is to be built. Lovely scenery, great bus service with a stop outside the camp.
We had a great time in comfort and the two days red hot weather made it perfect.

The site is in a fantastic location with the amazing Hadrian's Wall, Birdoswald, the Roman Army Museum, Vindolanda and many other roman sites within easy striking distance. The AD122 bus service stops outside the farm gate so a day's walking can easily be done without having to use the car. Hexham is about 20 minutes drive away and is really worth exploration. The Abbey is incredible and has a lovely parkland area behind it.
We stayed at Herding Hill over the Spring Bank holiday weekend 27-30 May and, unfortunately, experienced the full force of exceptional driving rain and 70mph winds. However, thanks to Steve, the owner, we found our two tents upright and intact when we came back to the site after a day's exploration of the area on Sunday early evening. Steve had positioned his landrover to protect our tents from the wind and had checked pegs and fastenings throughout the day. We really cannot thank him enough as his actions were over and above our expectations. We were really overwhelmed by his kindness and thoughtfulness. We know that we were not the only campers who were helped by Steve that day. There was a such a warm and friendly welcome on our arrival from both Steve and Anne and we were delighted to hear of their plans for further development of the site. It will be an amazing site when all the plans come to fruition.
Despite the weather, we loved the site and had a wonderful weekend. Many, many thanks again to Steve and Anne for being such fantastic hosts. Your hard work and dedication deserves so much success.
