After waiting until 1pm for reception to open and deal with the campers before us, we were disappointed to find that they wouldn't allow tents to be pitched on grass; only hardstandings. This would have made pegging out impossible. It was a normal, wet November day. Derwentwater campsite next door said the same.

On arrival, after driving since 6am and timing to arrive at 12 noon.

Main reason for this, was not aware arrival time changed to 1pm also best time to arrive to get best choice of pitch even though on CC&C sites you are directed to a pitch, there is the option to change.

So arrived at 11. 59, perfect. Not.

Was told to turn around and go out, where? Don't care where, you can't stay here.

It's bank holiday weekend, after queueing through Keswick, where are you supposed to go with a 24 ft caravan? I explained to the warden we had travelled since 6am and we had my 2 kids with us, the answer, we could try the bus park at booths.

It was full, like everywhere else, I drove to portclaith which is next to the marina, about the only place I could think to park, we did find a spot but not ideal, cars having to get past us.

On returning to the site as we were told for entry at 1pm, after queueing again through Keswick we joined the queue down the lane to the site.

Eventually we made our way to the front.

I was Parking in the shade as it was hot, unbelievably it got to 29' that day, I kept the car in the shade whilst we queued but was told to keep moving forward, eventually near the front a warden 'greeted us' told me to stay in the car and my wife to go to the reception to book in, that's so I can keep moving forward I guess. At reception my wife was greeted with hostility as to why she had turned up as there was already 6 there, so what, another queue. She was treated like a child and told she shouldn't have come forward until told to, well, she had been.

So eventually on the pitch and set up.

We were put in the field near the exit as we were told it was quitter. After now returning home, I can tell yo none of the wardens must spend the night there, it is noisy, with cars leaving and caravans bouncing over the speed humps, noisy with the huge fans on top of the new toilet block.

Although we had great weather, that night it rained, a lot, our hard standing pitch flooded and my daughters stuff got wet in the awning. Next day I went to the laundry to wash and dry a carrier bag of stuff, fortunately a manager was there and told me after I had loaded the machine it would not work as there was insufficient washing in it? Why have such complex machines? If he had not been there I would have lost my £3. 50.

I ended up having to wash it by hand.

Drones, I have never seen it mentioned in any rules that drones are banded.

I took a syma X5C to the shore of the lake to take some aerial pics of the evening, now this drone wouldn't hurt a fly if it fell on it, it's light, also I was not near any caravans. Sure enough the fun police turned up and told me, 'you can't do that here'.

Toilet block closed for cleaning.

After being in France repeatedly in the summer, I fail to understand why the British site owners need to close the whole toilet block for cleaning?

In France they come to clean toilets and showers and move down the line, I have been asked to use the ladies shower in the past, but not a problem and whilst you might be so shocked, how many of you walk around a toilet blocked naked? Everything you do is, in a cubicle, so it's irrelevant, in fact why do we have. Ladies and gents anyhow?

So I want to wash my grill pan after breakfast, but the WHOLE toilet block is closed for 2 hours.

I mean seriously, when cleaning do we have to stand back and admire a clean toilet block, just go in and clean one cubicle at a time, some one will eventually come and use the cubicle just cleaned, that's how it works on the continent.

Also, when I am leaving and packing my caravan etc after a week or too of holiday, it's going to take a while, I am conscious I have to be gone by 12, it the rules, whilst packing I clean my toilet and washroom, then the kids and I need the toilet before we set of for our 6 hour journey, we don't want to use the caravan as its been emptied and cleaned, oh and we can't use the toilet block because it's shut for cleaning between 10. 30 and 12. 30. WHY? Why not shut the toilet block when. Wait for it, when very few people need to use it, like mid afternoon or early evening ready for next day, just a thought.

And the laundry room is 'closed for cleaning 2-4pm' why??

We walk to the lake beach and Pass 3 wardens, try to pay our launch fee for the dinghy, can't, office is closed? Just take the £2. 30 off us and stick it the till later for gods sake.

I love this site, it's in a perfect location, for both the lake, marina and especially shopping and Keswick, but the rules applied in my book, totally lose the name, 'holiday site' maybe not unique to this site, but are we totally losing what this whole thing is supposed to be, a relaxing holiday?

Because if you don't agree anything up to now is wrong, how about returning to your caravan on a bank holiday Monday, to have a relaxing drink sat outside, to be descended upon by a host of revving 4 stroke grass cutting machines from leaf blowers to ride on mowers, come on please, leave me in piece for today, why today, do it tomorrow?

So shall I come again, I chose it for the kids to give them a great holiday, but I will think twice and maybe it's more relaxed and peaceful out of season, but the rules will still apply, the fun police will still pounce on you camouflaged with the their red tops out of the bushes or wherever it is they sneak up from.

Keswick town just a few minutes walk away. Site facilities are kept immaculate and staff are friendly and courteous. BUT the pitches are tiny I mean tiny. Our motorhome and awning would not fit onto the allowed area of the pitch. This despite having rang and booked a pitch for motorhome and awning. Have written to the camping and caravanning club with regard to this issue but am still awaiting a reply a month later. As a member I am not impressed. If, as the warden told us that all sites run by the club will now have pitches of this size. Ring before you book with your unit TOTAL measurements as you may not fit on the 6 x 5 metre pitch.

What a wonderful site. The facilities are first class. The staff have worked incredibly hard to repair the site after the floods and it is a credit to them. The team were often to be found working late into the evening making sure all was in order but were invariably cheerful and willing to help.

We were able to chose our pitch which was nice.

The location is beautiful with excellent views but close to the town centre, bus station and the boats. We were able to do walks direct from the site and used the boats one day to reach Cat Bells.

We will be back

We have just returned from this site and we will definitely be back one day.

Location couldn't be better. On the edge of the Lake with breathtaking views in every direction.

Friendly wardens clean showers and toilets and very well maintained site.

They are recovering from the December 2015 floods and one shower block was closed. Even though site was full we never had to wait use the facilities. The wardens are working very hard to reseed flooded grass areas etc. They are doing an excellent job and keep the site beautifully maintained.

Keswick is a 5 minute walk from the site. With a Booths supermarket and the usual mix of gift shops etc.

We had an excellent Sunday roast at the Pack Horse pub recommended by one of the wardens.

We will definitely return to this site.

We love Keswick 'lakeside' as we call it as it is at the side of the lake! Although full to bursting we managed to book in just for a night! We have stayed here many times and always get a friendly welcome by all the staff.

We love to use the buses to get to our favourite walks and Booths supermarket has wonderful local produce just a walk from the site. It's a site for all seasons and Derwentwater is always beautiful with its famous launches and old style rowing boats if you fancy being on the water as well as taking photos.

Lots of easy or longer walks from the site including a visit to Casterigg Stone Circle is a must.

We also try to go to the old cinema one night to see a film another must!

We have been reading the reviews for this site for a few years and promised ourselves a visit when the toilets/shower blocks had been refurbished to meet the usual ccc standards, and we finally decided to book for 5 nights this month. Wow, the shower blocks are excellent, with spacious cubicles, good flow of hot water from shower, individual wash basins in their own cubicles and plenty of toilet facilities, all kept very clean. Beautiful location at the side of the lake with amazing views of the surrounding hills and mountains. The site was virtually full but there was still a feel of space and tranquillity and never had to queue for showers/toilets. Keswick is only 5mins walk away and has a good range of shops and a medium sized supermarket called Booths, plus a vast array of outdoor activity shops covering everything that you would need. Will definitely be going again.

Why oh why do they use the bottom field?

Have visited the site year on year for the past 10 years. Unfortunately never again.

An extremely popular site so you must book early. Last year we had our visit here cancelled 8pm the night before departure (car loaded, fridge empty) owing to flooded field. Love the site so booked again.

Quagmire would best describe the field this year, tents flooded out; rain channels dug to remove the rising ground water from beneath. If you are a tent without electric hook up book at your own risk. Over the years the non-electric have been pushed onto the Island where the rain comes down and the water comes up, rather too frequently.

That said, for caravans and tents with hook up the site is beautifully located, next to the lake but a short walk into town. Lots to do in and around Keswick, fair weather or foul; we've walked, mountain-biked, climbed and Ghyll scrambled, fantastic if you like the outdoors.

The refurbished shower blocks are refreshing and staff have always been helpful and understandably under pressure at busy times - weekend check in and severe weather.

Simply wish they would wait for dry periods before opening the Island or allow non hook up back onto the main field. We are seasoned campers with all the right equipment, unfortunately our last three visits unfortunately spoilt or cancelled by the ground conditions, hence the search for an alternative site.

Facilities are excellent. Good toilet block, with plenty of showers and hair dryers. Camping by the lake is lovely. The site is very peaceful and calm. A little disappointed that as a member of the Camping and Caravanning Club, you still had to pay extra for wifi. Check-in is slow and staff are a little abrupt. Having said this, because the site is so calm, I would return.

This is an excellent site, just a short walk from the centre of Keswick. Access to the lake and fells is easy from the sites and the surrounding area offers great walking, scenery and watersports. The town has everything you need.

Facilities on site have been renovated and they are now excellent. Site wardens are friendly and, even though the site was full, it was very well organised.

Fairly expensive in high season - it was over £30 per night for 2 people.

Overall, great site!
