Had a flying visit to this site before backpacking over Kinder Scout. I had a late arival 11pm and an early start and the owner was very accommodating and pleasant.

Site was well looked after and flat, ideal for camping. NIce location too. I didn't experience the midges as others did.

There was also a BBQ set up which I assume was open later in the day.

Toilets and showers fair quality, good enough for all but the fussiest traveller.

Costs me and the dog 5 for the night so reasonable too. Recommended.

A nice small site with no caravans. Fantastic walks all around. We never spent any money or got in the car all weekend, we just walked.
The facilities were nice and clean and the shop was well stocked.
There are maps showing you suggested routes to take depending on how far you want to walk. The midges were quite bad on site but the shop stocked repellent and we had our citronella. Half an hour from Sheffield if you go over the Stocksbridge bypass and Woodhead rather than the Snake pass.

If you are considering a base for walking the pennines this is the site for you. We were there for 4 nights and had a fantastic time. Clean and quiet is about all I can say really as it is mainly a base for walkers, well worth a visit. As mentioned on another review, it is hard to find so don't forget to turn at the youth hostel otherwise you have missed it. One small point the MIDGES are the worst I have ever come across so plenty of spray is needed.

Just got back from this site, very pleased overall, only a couple of things we felt let it down. Not very well signed off the road, you need to turn at the phone sign, if you miss it (we did) it is a long way to find a safe turning point. The site was clean and well presented. Even though it is small, it doesn't feel crowded. We felt the toilets and showers needed a good clean and maybe an upgrade.
Quiet site with great views and walks. Don't forget the insect bite cream, as they do get you in the evenings.

Please bear in mind that this was our first camping trip so have nothing to compare it to.

Turn where you see the sign for a pay phone. we missed it first time and had to drive quite a way to turn around.

Really lovely site, surrounded by trees, with trees running down the centre, plenty of shade should you require it. Ground was slightly sloping, grass was cut and looked well maintained. Site was full but didn't feel crowded at all.

When we arrived we were greeted by the friendly site manager who directed us to our pitch, he was always around for the shop/greeting customers/friendly chat/useful info/directions and advice.

Toilets and showers: toilets were clean enough, even when it was really busy, showers could do with updating but were clean.

There was some noise from the road and from planes but you get used to it and watching the planes was pretty cool.

Surrounding area is lovely, there were quite a few campers walking the pennine way. There are plenty of easy walks too. You can walk over to woodhead dam, round resevoirs, the longdendale trail or if you're more adventurous there are plenty of big hills to tackle!

If you're into wildlife there's lots of it, apparently there are red kites and kestrels in the area, unfortunately we didn't see them.

There weren't any local facilities as such, nearest village is tintwistle (few miles away) then hollingworth, both had good pubs.

Glossop is only about 10 minutes away, where there is a big supermarket and some chain retail shops. There are also lots of lovely independent shops here too.

Holmfirth is about 30 mins away, where 'Last of the Summer Wine' is filmed. Easy access to Sheffield and the rest of the peak district.

The local residents we met were very friendly and suggested a good walk...they had an adorable dog.

There were a lot of midges in the evening, take lots of insect repellant!

We had a great time for our first trip camping. We'll be going back soon, need to climb the big hill!

We have just spent a great weekend at the C&CC site @ Crowden. The site is only small (45 pitches) and only takes tents and trailer tents. Some of the pitches are sloping but on the whole it is flat and grassy. Site shop selling basic camping needs and a natural stone toilet block that is very clean but could do with bringing up to date a little. Lots of good walks nearby. But you'll have to drive if you want a nearby shop or pub. We liked it so much we are going back in May.
