1 Reviews of the Klondike Grande

By: 1uk3y  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2018   Rating:   Date: 14/08/2018

I have taken this tent on 4 3-night camping trips having purchased it brand new in April 2018. I also purchased the Robens Denali stove but I have only used this once with the tent.

Firstly, the good points -

1. It's very roomy, really airy and provides bags of space. In true tipi style, when you are stood inside it just feels so grand! This tent is taller and wider than the standard Klondike.

2. Ventilation and environment - If you have never owned a poly cotton tent before you will really notice the difference in terms of the atmosphere inside the tent in both hot and cold conditions. In the heat, the tent is cool and airy which is a far cry from standard tents. In the cold, the tent manages to retain warmth and simply feels more comfortable. The ventilation system is really good - you pull 2 cords inside the tent and this opens the vents at the top of the tipi. I really like this feature. There are also 3 half-moon vents in the side walls.

3. Aesthetics - every time I pitch this tent it gets lots of attention! People love this tent, it looks great.

Now, unfortunately, the negative.

The positives can't hide my disappointment with this tent. I have pitched this tent 4 times and already it's looking worse for wear! God knows what it'll look like in a year or even 3 years time! Anyone who knows me knows that I am extremely careful with things I own, I meticulously care for my stuff! It gets dirty easily and tent cleaner won't remove the stains fully, once you clean the tent, this also seems to remove some of the protective water repellency as leaks were occurring where id scrubbed the tent! Another quality issue, The red guy-lines are fraying etc.

Quite possibly the worst thing about this tent - you will get wet if it rains. Seriously, you will. I'm afraid the 'Hydrotex' poly cotton just isn't up to the job of dealing with British weather - Sorry Robens, I do have photos to prove this. This tent leaks, drips at the seams which will leave a star pattern of wetness on the groundsheet by the end of the rainfall. It also leaks at the A frame where the top of the frame slots into the flysheet. Mine leaked particularly bad at seams where the guy-lines met the flysheet.

The stitching is poor in places, in places it looks like the seamstress has simply whizzed the machine needle all over the place to be safe! unfortunately this has compromised the seams in places and resulted in more leaking.

Pegs - they are very light aluminium and they bend far too easily!

Guylines - Should be reflective (robens do sell these as extras) but the guy lines are pivotal to the structure of the tent and one trip and part of the tent will cave in! Someone tripped on one of mine and ripped the guy line tab clear from the tent wall, opening a hole in the side of the tent (peg stayed put!).

It's a shame as this is the first tent I've ever owned that I have actively looked to return! I love this tent and I wish I could just get a replacement but I'm just too worried I'm going to end up with the same problems.

Cheers,

Manufacturer's Description

The roomy quick-pitching Klondike Grande provides excellent levels of comfort for up to nine people. The vertical door makes for easy access especially in bad weather. Protective eaves run around the tent to shelter door and walls from rain run off. The zip-in groundsheet features a zip to the centre alloy pole, enabling it to be rolled away to create a safe area in which to use an optional tent stove and a place for muddy boots. The bell tent features the neat new Internal Apex Vent Control that can be easily opened from inside using just two cords neatly channelled along the walls.
