2 Reviews of the SheltaPod

By: Ratty  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2020   Rating:   Date: 20/03/2020

The SheltaPod is a fantastic piece of kit that will look great against any campervan, from an "Old Skool" VW bus, to a modern campervan. If you don't have a campervan it's not a problem the SheltaPod can attach to any car or vehicle up to a height of 2.8m using five different attachment methods.

The SheltaPod came well packaged, in a good size bag with compression straps - the instructions were sewn into the bag, ensuring they cannot blow away or get lost.

To put the SheltaPod up it is pretty easy with two people, but will take some practice to perfect it and on your own may be a bit of a struggle, but once you have done it a few times you will pick up some tips along the way making it easier.

To start we just attached the SheltaPod canopy to the campervan, this can be done using a figure 8 awning rail, velcro straps to attach to roof bars, or guys over the camper and secured on the other side. There's lots of info and photos on the Sheltapod website about this. We used the velco straps around the roofbars on our T5 which worked well.

It comes with a heavy duty groundsheet to lay under the awning which will protect the floor and and stop the inner tent from getting dirty and importantly from being ripped or holed by anything underneath it.

Once we attached the canopy part, we simply pulled out the SheltaPod and fed the three fibreglass poles through the guides, and attached them to the pins at each side of the awning - this will create the basic shape. Then simply pegged out and guyed to secure it for stronger winds.

It now has shape and you are ready to put the optional bedroom inner if you wish to use that. The inner tent has an integrated bath-tub style groundsheet, two doors, one mesh and the other fabric which will keep you private when inside. It's just a case of pegging the edges out out into the corners of the Sheltapod - then clip it up to the roof using the simple fasteners. It was a bit fiddly to clip that onto the flysheet, but we got there in the end, once we worked out to attach the centre clips first.

The bedroom inner is perfect to sleep in, and should provide great extra sleeping space for the kids, or adults - we'd say it would be better for two, but would fit four in if necessary. Bear in mind there is limited covered space if you've got the inner tent in it takes up all of the awning but you can still sit outside under the sun canopy part.

You have two adjustable upright poles to use between the SheltaPod and your campervan / vehicle and this pushes the material up, which prevents any build up of water and puddling in the event of rain. It comes with two "privacy panels" which you can erect at the sides of the open part under the canopy, meaning you can keep your activities and possessions out of sight.

The SheltaPod is very versatile, being more than just a shelter, use it as tent with a car, or as a campervan awning to create extra living space to escape the rain, an extra bedroom pod or simply use it as a sun shade. To use it as a driveaway it was simple to just undo the velco straps, pull back the canopy and leave the Sheltapod in place on our pitch whilst we went out for the day.

At the end of our break, it all came down very easily, and we were very grateful to find the bag was a decent size - unlike some awnings /tents, we got it all back in with no problem!

This is a great summer addition to the kit and I am looking forward to using it more over the summer months at festivals and sites.

The SheltaPod might not be the perfect awning in every sense, but it's pretty good at most things, and without doubt it's definitely one of the coolest - if you want to stand out on site you will, it's like a spaceship has landed next to your campervan or car. Fab, we love it ! Don't forget to watch out timelapse video of it going up!

The sheltaPod is very well made, nice looking and lightweight. We've were impressed with the high quality of the tent and the lightweight poles.

I was concerned about using it in high winds, but the sheltaPod stands up to the weather pretty well.

It arrived nicely packaged with a large bag to make it easier after a trip to pack away.

Putting the tent up is more of a two-person job, especially if it is a bit windy, however it is doable on your own, just take your time

It provides protection from both wind & rain, which is very handy in the UK!

The SheltaPod provides a solution to the storage dilema some people have when touring / camping with a smallish campervan and can be used to provide an extra sleeping space, comfortable for 2, it may be quite cramped if 4 people were to sleep in it. It is useful as a storage area and can be used as a kitchen space and is light and spacious for this.

When packed away it is smaller than most other awnings and takes up little space.

Overall this is a great tent for longer stays, and weekends alike, and perfect as a driveaway awning to secure your pitch and provide the extra space that is needed when on site.
