5 Reviews of the Alabama 7P

By: Cyth  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2017   Rating:   Date: 08/03/2019

January 2019 and we warnt to buy a bigger Tent for the Campingtrips to the Netherlands.

The last Holydays with a Tent is years away, and we want to have a Tent with the Option to sit in it in bad weather conditions.

I want a Poletent, because I don't trust the Rabbit. Äh the Airtents.

I watched all Reviews on Youtube. Vango, Kampa, and all the Othello Manifacturer. After all that, I choose Outwell.

The Montana 6p was great, but to small. The Vermont 6p was ok, but it was Not the right one. The Winner was the Alabama 7p.

It is like the other Reviewers said, absolutly perfect.

They have made some Updates in Meantime. Flypannel in the new D Door at the Front, with no Problems in the Zips. Windows in the Sleepingareas. Only the Ventilationpannels are dancing in the Wind,

But this not a big Issue. For me, this Tent is a absolutly „Hot Tip“.

There are many Dealers with a few of this Tents. Some of Thema are less than 800 Euro. Carpets and Footprints are available to.

9/10 Stars

Amazing tent! We bought it because of the bedroom layout. We have 2 children, currently 9 & 7, but wanted a tent that would still work for us in 3-5 years time therefore the Alabama was perfect.

I also love that you can roll away the 3 Rd bedroom and the carpet is designed to cover that area unlike several other tent layouts.

Unsurprisingly, the tent is very sturdy and secure. So why didn't I give it 10/10? I have a couple of niggles but they are only niggles.

1. Outwell plastic pegs are notoriously rubbish! Given the quality of their tents, I find it very surprising that they haven't updated the pegs.

2. The front door is huge, and that's brilliant, but it doesn't have a fly screen (all other doors do have screen). That would make the space inside even more flexible.

3. In strong winds you want to be in a good tent and the Alabama ticks that box but it seems to be designed to take the wind head on or straight from the rear. We had wind hitting us on the corner for several days and, while there was no damage, the tent didn't like it. The wind unzipped the front door! So we had to peg down the Zips and use a different door. But also the Velcro tabs used for the vents were utterly inadequate for the wind. They wouldn't stay open or closed. We felt like we were sitting in a crisp packet!

I've only written 3 negative things here! My list of positives is much longer! And if I had to buy a tent tomorrow, I'd still be buying the Alabama!

We bought our Alabama 7P after visiting the NEC camping show (something well worth doing) in feb 2016.

Our last four tents have all been Outwell as we love the quality that Outwell guarantees. We picked this tent as it is a large tent (a little smaller than our last one) but had three defined sleeping areas one which could be rolled away for extra living area and importantly a rear door which would allow air flow through the tent on hot sunny days.

The tent has three main areas, sleeping at the rear and side, a living area and a front wet area with a clip in bucket ground sheet.

In warm weather the middle section can be unzipped and allows for one large living area. With the views from the panoramic front windows impressive indeed. However when cold the living area especailly when the third bedroom is up is just too small for 4 and certainly not for 7.

There are lots of little things that Outwell seem to have missed on this tent, from only having one hanging point for a light to the fact the tent has to be perfectly flat for the bucket groundsheet to work effectively. There are other little bits that don't have the normal Outwell quality including the front zips and entrance plus having a seam in the carpet it's not that big to need one. Internal condensation is a big issue with this tent.

It's easy and quick to pitch and certainly is sturdy, we've been in strong gales and were other large tents have shuck and terrified their occupants ours has stood rock steady and water tight.

Outwell sadly have missed a trick by discontinuing the side awning as this would make this tent perfect for that extended break or holiday.

The bedrooms are of a good size and having multiple options of entry into them is an extremely useful feature.

It's took some getting used to but overall this is a lovely tent just not to the standard we expect from Outwell.

We're fairly new to camping and previously used friends 'spare' tents. Got the bug and decided to treat ourselves to the Alabama 7p. We've now used it twice (once on the Isle of Wight and recently in the New Forest) and about to go again. It's an absolutely fantastic tent and has given our old landlords a serious case of tent-envy!

Our kids are 9 and 15 and the bedroom layout is perfect to give everyone the privacy they need. With the third bedroom rolled away, the living area is huge with ample space for a large table and 4 big chairs whilst still leaving plenty of room to walk around and have furniture setup. The setup means the kids can share and we have more space or they can have a room each (or bring a friend each) and we just roll the 3rd room away during the day.

There is a back door between the first and second bedrooms as well as a side door giving loads of ventilation in hot weather.

Our recent trip saw high winds and torrential rain for a few days but this was no problem for the tent.

Highly recommended and so glad we made the investment! Just wish Outwell hadn't discontinued the side awning the same season before we had a chance to buy.

I cannot say enough good things about this tent. As a family of 4, with 6&4 year olds, we have been looking for a solution to our previous 1 bedroom tunnel tent, which inevitably means that as soon as one of the kids wakes up, we are noticed and so everyone is up! This tent offers the perfect solution with its 3 bedroom set up.

It is a large tent , with plenty of room in the main communal area, and the outer front is huge! With its clip in ground sheet, the front area is not at risk from water seeping in around the side in bad rain (and this has been tested!), and the windows allow us to see all sides, even with the doors closed.

In terms of pitching, this is very easy, and took 2 of us about half an hour to get the shape on our first run out, plus another 20 mins for just me to bang all the extra pegs in, whilst my wife unpacked. Taking down was even easier, and the big tent bag is easy to fit all the gear into.

It is a little expensive, as with all Outwells but ultimately you get what you pay for with this brand, and it is well worth the money. The one question is whether grey is an attractive colour for a tent but we love it! If the price is putting you off, check ebay for the Alabama 7 (might be 8)P, which is just like this tent but you can get one second hand for a few hundred quid (our friends got a once used for £350 and it is perfect). Alternatively, the Vango tunnel tents are always very good with a better price point, bit not as sturdy as this thick poled behemoth!
