2 Reviews of the Mirage 200

Just adding to manufacturer's spec and other reviews. Bought this tent to upgrade from Meteor 200 which was noisy in the wind. This one goes up well with its 3 colour coded poles and is free standing so can be moved after assembly. Virtually all the pegs provided hold the fly down and the guys are well positioned to hold the whole tent down in gales. Feels like a roomy tent, and could probably squeeze in 2 with kit in the front section. Nice sized front space for storing kit and cooking in bad weather though take care with naked flames and gases. The protex ripstop 5m head flysheet makes this a worthwhile, sturdy and waterproof tent. Did think about the Hellvelyn 200 but couldn't find one with a decent flysheet. This really is a nice, professional feeling tent but it's a tad heavy at 2.6kg for just one person. It would however be a faff splitting the inner from the fly ( say for 2 people) as they're well bolted together with pegs and eyes. I guess it's a one man tent really and you take the hit on the weight in order to enjoy the security and space. Love the green which blends into the Dartmoor countryside well. Can't fault this tent. Can't think why you would spend more for a similar sized tent unless you were keen to reduce weight and go for a flashier name. Really pleased with this tent, made for wild camping on uneven ground in windy and wet places. Would be a 4 season tent were it not for the front triangular section catching snow, the one advantage of the Meteor 200.

I bought this tent as a step up from my little dome tent - I wanted something which a good HH rating which would stand plenty rain and wind and this tent fits the bill: 5000HH fly. I found it easier to pitch than a Vango Tempest and there is plenty clearance between the inner and outer layers. It pitches fly first, or all in one. The no-see-um mesh keeps midges and other beasties out, and there's a decent porch for your boots and other equipment to roost in overnight. There's plenty room for one person and rucksack and probably room for two so long as they don't mind being close. I can sit up in my tent and it's a good length so I don't feel cramped (I'm 5 ft 6'). Pitching on my own is straightforward with practice, with 3 good quality poles and colour coded sleeves. The semi-geodesic design means you can relocate it once you have it standing because it's self supporting : if you can't hammer in pegs (say, camping on sand or a riverside etc) you can still use this tent. On this tent's first outing I did get a lot of condensation even with the vents open and there were a couple of droplets on the inner but it was a very, very hot/humid night with loads of of rain so I think that was inevitable - and none of the droplets got through to me! The rain just seemed to run right off no bother. I haven't tried this tent in a gale yet, so looking forward to see how it does - I'm sure it'll be fine though, being semi geodesic. This feels like a really solid 3 season tent. It's also on the D of E kit list. The pegs are a bit weedy so many people replace them with sturdier ones, but that's easy to do. This tent would be happy on a campsite or in the hills/wild camping. The one wee quibble is the size of the tent bag - it's really tight to fit the tent back in. It is possible, but pretty tricky especially if it's blowing a hoolie on the campsite, so I'd recommend using a bigger tent bag. I'm very pleased with this tent and looking forward to many trips with it for years to come.
