5 Reviews of the Homestead 5

By: DiabloFish  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2004   Rating:

This is our second family-size tent, and we've had it for 5 years now. It's also the second Wild Country tent, the first being a Mountain Quasar.

It's very sturdy once erected, but there's definitely a technique to doing so - that said, it's no more difficult than others that I've used. It's far easier with two people, and I wouldn't tackle it without two people if it's windy.

In ideal conditions I've had the poles and flysheet unrolled and pegged down in less than 5 minutes. Once this is done then there's less urgency with the internals. If it's raining then the reverse can be done even quicker!

Once it's ready then it's great: Plenty of open space for the 3 kids; Lots of pockets; Thick, well-fitting groundsheets. We've used it in storms where other tents have been damaged overnight, but the Homestead has been fine . Quite cosy in fact.

My only criticism is the side door zippers - they require care when using to avoid trapping the flap on the flysheet. Hopefully this 'feature' will be designed-out of later models.

From my experience I'd happily recommend the Homestead 5, and any of the other Wild Country tents.

This is our first family tent. Can't grumble really - I guess they don't make them now but we've had several holidays in it now and had no real problems - all kinds of weather - gales, storms but no disasters. It is kind of a bugger to get up but then what tent isn't ? We've had it 5 years now and it shows no real signs of ageing. Fits 2 adults and 2 kids fine. - obviously you get tent envy when you see newer and bigger models but it is great - wouldn't hesitate buying a wild country tent again.

We are 2 adults, 2 young children and a dog and for the odd 4/5 day trip this tent is excellent.

It is difficult to pitch as the poles are heavy and getting everything in the right place to pitch correctly is tricky. However, once it is up it is going to stay there.

We've had all sorts of weather and no problems whatsoever.

One main niggle. The Front Door/Canopy is very useful but the zips trap the folds of the tent every time you try to undo it.

I think the newer models are now SIG which will be a big improvement.

A good sized, very stable tent but a little difficult to pitch properly. It took a bit of fiddling and adjustment to ensure that the flysheet at either end of the tent was taut.

Great family tent, loads of room, its 3 season and will stand up to most weathers. We have camped in it a number of times. Both bedrooms are a good size.
