6 Reviews of the Winnipeg
By: Dannas Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
We have owned the Winnipeg for a couple of years with no problems. Good for 2/3 days away with good head room, storage, ventilation and packing bag. A high quality brand with a fantastic 5000 HH makes this tent totally bomb proof. The tent proved its worth and my inkling not to be caught out by bad weather again, on the weekend of 21 /22 May 2011 during horrendous British weather including gales force winds and heavy rain for 48 hours in Ullswater . The tent performed 100% when friends we camped with tents floundered.

Having owned several good quality tents such as Vango , and Khyam highlander , both of which are excellent , I wanted a tent that had separate bedrooms and that could stand up to the weather dished out by the Scottish highland gods of rain. After much research I chose the Khyam Winnipeg - what a choice with a 5000 hydrostatic head it withstood all that the isle of Skye could throw at us. It is very easy and quick to erect, has excellent standing room in the middle section. All in all it is an excellent buy , the carpet is also worth buying as it adds that extra bit of comfort and warmth

Having endured cramped leaky tents we decided to invest a bit more and stick to a detailed specification that required - full height head clearance, sewn in bathtub groundsheet, sleeps 4 (even though there are only 2 of us), door that also acted as a porch roof and a minimum 3000 Hydrostatic Head. We spent hours searching and viewing tents but only The Winipeg ticked every box and also offered a 5000 HH so for £175, it appeared to be an ideal choice. We used the tent for 5 nights last summer and were extremely pleased with the performance.
Easy to erect, hugely spacious for 2 people when you only install one bedroom (would be fine for a family of 4 also) and it easily coped with 3 nights of rain. The dome-style design is not only easy to erect but is very efficient for shedding water as there are falls in all directions, unlike our previous cylinder tent that was prone to developing weighed down ponding areas along the roof ridge line. The relatively inexpensive additional groundsheet and internal rug are also well-worth considering. Overall, a well-designed, high quality tent which met our specification perfectly and has exceeded our expectations.

We are couple who recently retired and decided to regain our youth by going camping again! We were amazed at the improvements to tents that has happened in recent years and settled on the Winnipeg as it had the bonus of sewn in ground sheet.
Liking luxury we also bought the carpet which is great for feeling snug and warm. We liked the two bedroom pods as I definitely wanted a proper camp bed (get stiff knees in the morning!) and husband wanted one of those self inflating beds! No problem had a 'pod' each!
We have now put this up/take down 4 times including 'high winds, torrential rain, mud, thunder storm etc - just need snow to complete the weather range'. We stayed cosy/dry and very comfortable.
Only fault I could find at all was in high winds it was difficult to keep the sewn in groundsheet and exterior fabric together at the doorways - ended up using case as sort of door stop! We have really enjoyed ourselves and look forward to using this lots of times in 2010.
We will definitely buy the 'footprint tarp' to help keep ground sheet clean.

Have used this tent on several occasions. It was easy to put up as I am new to camping and was a bit worried it would be dark before we pitched. It only took us 30minutes to pitch which I thought was amazing. Very comfortable inside and with enough headroom as my husband is 6ft 2in. Stayed upright when recent winds blew everything down on campsite. Very sturdy and tension rods work well with this tent.

Having owned many tents over the years, this is my favourite by far even though I’ve only used it 3 times! The build quality is excellent, with strong materials and components, and lots of little touches that make it stand out from the crowd. I particularly liked the small windows at ankle height that allow you to peer out at the world, while still safely nestled in your sleeping bag.
The Winnipeg is easier and quicker to erect than many of a similar design, as the pole sleeves are short with clips securing the fly to the poles on the lower half. It also has a fully sewn in groundsheet making it warm in cold weather, less likely to get flooded in wet weather, and the inside of the fly stays clean when you take the tent down.
Large vents provide good ventilation while multiple windows and doors provide ample light. Because doors on both sides of the tent open up fully to make a shady porch, the tent remains cool inside even when in full sunlight.
The tent is divided into 2 large detachable sleeping pods with a central area large enough for all but the tallest to stand up in. One of the pods can be left out, turning the tent into an extremely spacious 2 berth for longer trips.
The sleeping pods themselves are large with plenty of room for a double airbed, and have numerous pockets sewn in for those miscellaneous items.
The tent is made of tough nylon with a fire retardant coating so you feel a bit safer cooking inside when the heavens open. Speaking of which, the weather proofing is excellent. The fly sheet is rated at 5000mm hydrostatic head and has double taped seams making it possibly the most watertight of any similar design. We camped recently on a particularly wet weekend with rain lashing down for over 12 hours, waking to discover half the campsite under water but not a drop of moisture in our tent!
On a recent trip to Wales, the Winnipeg performed well with good stability in fairly high winds despite its large profile. The geometry of the tent combined with plenty of guy ropes keeps it steady, while the shorter pole sleeves allow air to flow more easily over the tent.
The tent comes packed into a good strong bag with separate compartments for poles, fly sheet and sleeping pods. This was easy to pack the tent into and made a nice change from the usual struggle with other tents.
Another unusual feature that is maybe a bit gimmicky but handy nonetheless: small zipped pockets at the guy points for stowing the guy ropes, preventing them from getting tangled. The tent is quite heavy weighing in at approx 15kg, making it suitable for car camping only. Khyam also offer a tent carpet for the Winnipeg (for lovers of luxury) and a footprint tarp to keep the groundsheet clean.
I am yet to find fault with the Winnipeg. It has performed well in hot, wet and windy weather and has shown itself to be practical and comfortable. The tent is versatile, being suitable for couples wanting a bit of extra space, or for small families wanting reliable weatherproofing and good build quality. It compares very favourably with similar designs by other manufacturers. While being more expensive than some, you get what you pay for with great design and thorough attention to detail.
