5 Reviews of the Bear Lake Side Extension
By: AM Beckett Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2007 Rating:
Extremely useful addition to Bear Lake 6 - we use ours to as a kitchen tent, which is great when the weather is bad.
It can be a bit tricky to pitch - you have to get the top part to rest on two of the tent poles, guiding it into place with guy ropes, which would be a little easier if it was a bit wider! We have used it for about 5 years and only had water pool on the top a couple times (absolute downpours!). That said, didn't cause a problem.

I bought the side extension at the same time as the tent and front extension to have a complete BL setup.
The side extension is a complete waste of money buying it & time spent putting it up.
Its a polava to put the thing on as theres a large piece of material and guy ropes that has to be thrown/flung over the roof of the main tent - then lined up carefully which isn't easy then the rest of the extension pegged and guy lines setup. If the ground isn't completely flat & even you end up with a duck pond sized water collection feature on your roof and its very hard to sort this.
After all that you end up with a canopy of just over 1m sticking out over the sde door of the tent - its as good as useless - if it rains and theres a slight breeze everything in there gets wet as theres no front/door/enclosure to it.
The only good thing about it is its well made and matches the tent, but for all the money it cost, the effort of putting it up and the space it take in the car - all for practically no useful return - save your money and buy either the BL front extension or the Montana front extension which has a fully enclosed front to it - and is actually useable in wet/windy weather

Having owned the bl6 now for three years we finally bought the side extension and what a great bit of kit it is. Totally transforms the bl into a more usable space, all the kitchen/cooking can be done in this area and left in + all shoes/boots leaving the canopy area for sitting under and relaxing. Only down side is no zipped in door but this would probably double the price anyway, and a good bbq cover over the kitchen area does the job.
Highly recommend one

Almost an essential bit of kit for the BL6 - provides a much needed outdoor area for cooking and general dinning and chilling out when the weather is wet or windy - yes I agree should have curtains and even a night cover for the entrance ( so as to avoid winds and unwelcome guests nicking you cooking gear ! ) - My verdict - A must have accessory - bit over priced - and need to be higher spec - but worthy of the purchase !

Having owned a Sunvalley 8 we found the Canopy at the front a great place to sit out/feed the kids. Having upgraded to the Bear Lake we bought the extension thinking we would do the same. We have a pop-up table with four stools but this fills the extension and there is not much room for anything else.
It is a great place to use for taking off shoes/coats and for cooking in wet weather if you plan on eating inside the tent.
Also for nearly two hundred quid (a quarter the price of the tent) you would think Outwell could have provided curtains!
