4 Reviews of the Texas L

I know an old tent so unlikely anyone will be buying one 'new' but adding for reference.

This tent although 'Outwell' was made exclusively for Yeomans and I am certain cuts were made to reach a price point desired by Yeomans.

Had mine for a few years and never had cause for concern but this just failed on us in high winds after about standing up to a beating for about 10 hours.

The weak point is the plastic pockets on the inside which the roof poles slot into.

After the bombardment, 3 of the pockets failed meaning the roof poles went THROUGH the pockets and whole integrity of tent is lost.

Such a simple design flaw to have soo much pressure on such a weak point.

This is our first family tent, which was used for 10 days in the Dordogne this August, for the first time. It says it sleeps 6, it sleeps the family of 4 comfortably.

Having now used it, and getting used to what fits our living requirements, we are beginning to look at other models. So what's wrong with it?

The main issue is that you are either in it or out of it, there is no canopy type space. It gets very very hot (having turned our citronella tea lights into liquid, and is difficult to cool down in the evening, whilst at the same time avoiding midgies entering bedrooms.

On the campsite in the Dordogne we were looking on enviously at an Outwell Bear Lake 6, a polycotton with a massive canopy extension (or do you call it a front porch?). Maybe in a couple of years!

Having said all that, the Texas seems to be a very well made tent, with lots of useful extras, like the little zip for the EHU. It obviously has a fully sewn in groundsheet, which was a definate requirement for us. Because it pitches in one (ie bedrooms aren't removed) me and my 11 year old son have now got pitching time down to 15 minutes, even in 38 degree heat! The best quality was the price, down to £179.99 from a RRP of £499.99.

I think for the first family tent, it's fine. But there is so much more now that we will look for in our next tent!

We initially bought a Skandika Toronto 8 which came with broken poles and literally fell apart over the course of two days, so we went out whilst still on holiday and bought a Outwell Texas L which is brilliant, so easy to put up, it came with ground sheet footprint and carpet! bedrooms are massive and don't have the sloping side wall like on some tents so you can use ALL the space in the bedrooms, living area is massive and as I said has a carpet I'm 6'1' and theres loads of headroom above me, we had a big storm on our second night of using it in Cornwall and it took everything mother nature could muster without any leaks! we also bought a Gelert Vector awning which is a perfect match for the Texas L and makes the whole thing work better, can't praise this tent, Outwell and Yeomans (where we bought it from) enough all excellent!

Bought this after seeing good reviews and after consideration of the Vango Icarus. My 1st tent and maybe it was a bit big for a 1st timer but still managed to erect it myself - although taking down again in a gale force wind was more difficult - ended up just throwing it into the car to repack later. Lovely big central compartment which is really useful for kids in bad weather and for cooking in when necessary. Can only really fit in 4 if using air beds but as there's just me and 2 kids it was great. Coped well in rain and wind despite being a high tent and absolutely no leaks whatsoever. Loved the 'windows' - 2 either side of the doors and 2 in the roof, which makes for a lovely airey feel. Fantastic tent and even better as I got it in Yeoman's sale for £160 instead of over £400!
