3 Reviews of the Austin 5

This is a great tent. There are only 3 of us but having been crawling around in a much smaller 3 person tent in very wet weather we wanted somewhere that we could sit in and eat etc. Our previous Royal tent leaked across the door upper seam so we taped this area prior to camping and touch wood we have had no leaks. We have been in hot/torrential/windy weather and been comfortable in all. Tho' a tent isn't much protection from near zero temperatures!

The groundsheet is all sewn in so it is not too draughty and the inner goes in last so can be kept dry. We had a good deal when we bought ours as we got a free footprint and carpet too which are great.

We haven't used the front opening as yet and have just found the side door with porch very useful, especially in the rain. We didn't get much rain in at all when coming and going.

It's an easy tent to put up and take down and we didn't need to reread the instructions.

The only downside is it is quite a bit bulkier and heavier than our 3 berth so packing the car takes more thought.

This a brilliant tent and really worth the money. It has a fully sewn in groundsheet which eliminates all leaks and drafts as standard. However as an extra bonus the doorway part of the groundsheet fold down to eliminate the trip hazard with other tents of this type but it clips up with toggles also so as to keep you warm when the doors are closed.

The tent can also be easily erected and dismantled in one piece, leaving the bedrooms in so as to keep the whole inner dry when erecting in the rain and also make the process quite fast. It is extremely easy to put up, I did so alone and without instructions the first time in about 45 minutes. I expect with practice and a second pair of hands it could be done in as little as 15 minutes.

It is shown as having 2 bedrooms (3+2). This is actually one large bedroom with a divider which is great if you want the kids to sleep in the same space as you but still have that privacy. They are also really well proportioned unlike other tents where you have to buy a berth bigger. This tent will comfortably fit the full 5 people in the bedrooms. Each bedroom area has pockets for torches etc and the outside of the bedrooms also has a row of pockets for storage in the living area.

The living area is nice and airy with the 2 doors and also 3 windows. All the windows have 'curtains' that can be put across for privacy. The side storm door has a mosquito layer as well as the flysheet layer as does the largest window so great if you want the fresh air but not the doors open for pets etc. There is enough space to stand throughout the tent with space in the living area to have a kitchen area without it getting in the way of the doors and also space for a small table and chairs which, in my opinion, is essential for british camping!

The construction of the tent means that even without using guides it is very rigid and won't blow down anytime soon, using the guideropes I am sure it would probably withstand gale force winds.

Am genuinely really pleased with this tent and don't think we'll be replacing it for many years to come. The only reason I have given it 9 instead of 10 is the only possible thing I can think of that would improve this tent would be the addition of blackout bedrooms.

Brought new because we thought it would be a good idea to try camping again after 20 years! Good points:

1. Easy to put up

2. Sown in Groundsheet

3. Light material over living area

4. Well sown together with double seams

5. Large front entrance

6. Storm porch over side door

7. Bedroom with built in groundsheet

Of course there is a down side! BUT only one! When it rained (and it did often on our week trial of camping!) the seam attaching the porch to the main body let water through and into the door if it was open! But as a tent for a small family, or a couple of old farts like us, it was perfect. We stayed dry and snug and would recommend this tent to anyone
