1 Reviews of the Ferret 1 Ultralight
By: Intengu Reason: I've used one Made in: 2008 Rating:
I used this tent all last summer, rain and sun. I bought it as a replacement for my 10 year old 2-man Kyham (an old-style one).
Observations:
It really does go up quickly, in minutes. It has just two hooped poles and a neat pocket on one side for each to slot into. Usual ring and tension strap on other side. This needs a real tug to achieve good tension. Needs 4 pegs and 1-2 guy ropes to stand up properly. Does need fully guying out to achieve good tension, otherwise tends to sag on top in dew.
It is very stable. This is my first tunnel tent and I am very happy with its sturdy character in the wind. Does tend to sway a bit in a romantic hey-I'm-in-a-tent! kind if way, but the sides don't blow against each other if you pitch it right.
Needs to be pitched rear into the prevailing wind.
One of the things I liked about my Kyham was the door each side and end-to-end sleeping position, no climbing on your tent companion to get in and out and own porch each. But the one-door arrangement on the Ferret works well, especially the height from the tunnel design which means you can sit up and put your boots on and step out into the weather.
Feels spacious inside. Pockets and a washing line end-to-end. Have sat 3 people inside on a stormy night to play cards in comfort.
Porch drops dew on you as you exit if not careful (which small tent doesn't though). Porch is big enough for 2 packs, boots and the like, and a spot of careful cooking.
It is very light, hard to feel it on my pack when walking. Packs very small too.
Packs without fuss. No special way to put it into the stuff sack, which is big enough to be easy-to-use.
Footprint seems essential for British soil and rain. Have used the tent without, but somehow the ground seems too close.
