This information is in another thread, however it is important so I thought I would repeat it here.

I had some problems pitching my Montana 12 for the first time last weekend - specifically the tension required to fit the pins on the poles either side of the rainsave porch. I could hardly get them in and was afraid of ripping my tent.

On the forums there are two other people who had similar problems and one Montana which ripped at the base of the rainsave porch.

I contacted Oase Outdoors (Outwell) regarding this and received the following as part of a very helpful and informative reply:

Montana 12 - The webbing attachments at the sides of the rainsave porch which also anchor to the ring should not be attached to the ring - they can be cut or unwound from the ring so that a separate peg can be used to hold them down - if cut off they will not affect the performance of the tent in any or affect your Outwell warranty.

I cannot praise Oase Outdoors enough for their prompt, courteous and very helpful reply. Manufacturing problems will always occur, but if all companies were as open and helpful as this the world would be a much better place.

I've seen some comments in the forums that people are starting to think the Outwell Montana range is problematic. I would like to try to set the record straight as I feel that some of my questions have contributed.

I have 2 Outwell Montanas - a 12 and a 4. I have test pitched both of these but not yet slept in them although my Monty 4 stood up to some very strong winds over the weekend until yesterday in our garden, and the Monty 12 was pitched and packed away on Sunday in the same windy conditions. Both tents coped very well with the strong winds and in my opinion are quality tents that are generally very well made. The fact that I was able to pitch the Monty 12 in such conditions impressed me - I think that my Diablo 900 would have been airborne taking us with it if we had tried.

My Monty 4 was delivered with the porchpole missing - Oase Outdoors (Outwell) immediately acknowledged this and has despatched a replacement without any problem.

I had a problem pitching my Monty 12 which has transpired to be due to a manufacturing fault where the porch is incorrectly attached to the ring & pin system for the poles. Once again Oase Outdoors (Outwell) openly told me of the problem and how to resolve it. I understand another member who actually ripped their porch has received a new flysheet from them without any hassle.

These days I prefer to shop based on Customer Service which is something many companies seem to have given up in the many rounds of cost savings. Far from putting me off, my experiences of a great tent with such excellent customer service to back the products up has in fact made me more confident to buy Outwell products again. Indeed I have just received an Oklahoma day tent to compliment my Sage Green collection.

Well Done Outwell

Yep! the ripped fly was me (now hanging head in shame as tent was pressie from oh.) It was a manufacturing problem, which is very rare and yes, outwell sent me a new fly for free, so I now have a spare which I'm sure could be repaired by a professional sewy type person. Brilliant tent which we plan to use for many years. Hats off to Outwell.

Well I pitched the Monty 12 over Easter and cut the webbing straps that link the porch to the ring & pin system and hey presto - an easy and perfect pitch. No problems.

It would have been possible to undo them from the keyring-like rings had I not been doing it onsite as it was getting dark, worried about stabbing myself with the screwdriver I was using to part the ring - so if you fancy doing this I would put some time aside before you travel.

I also used the replacement porch pole Outwell had sent me - slightly shorter (about 4 inches) than my original and whilst still hard work to fit (I guess things will loosen up with use) it was actually possible to fit it without fear of ripping the tent.

I now have a very successful and easy to pitch tent
