Hello camping forum! This is our first post, so 'hi' and we wonder if you might be able to advise us please.
We are a family of 4 just starting out as campers and apart from looking at tents we wonder if anyone can help us compile a 'camping checklist' of other things that we might need to purchase. We have (we think!) made a list of the obvious:
Sleeping bags & air beds
Table & chairs
Camping gas stove
Cooking pans
Kitchen unit/stand
Electric coolbox/fridge
Toilet (we have young children)
Torch
We would be very grateful for any help whatsoever.
Hi and welcome.
The list would almost be endless, although I have known for folk to forget to take the tent!.
We don't have a list, but do have a small outbuilding that houses our CH Boiler, everything in that room is for our camping trips, that way we never forget anything, it's a great system and works well for us.

Andy.
Ha, we had all of our kit in a corner of our garage - now we have all our kit in the garage and a small corner is reserved for everything else!

On your first few trips you will find that you need something you didn't bring, so the more camping you do the more organised you will become. I would suggest you take a rubber headed mallet for banging in tent pegs, and some spare pegs. You didn't include plates and cutlery in your list, these will also be useful.
Don't forget that many items need not be specifically designed/sold for camping, for example many of us prefer duvets to sleeping bags (they just tend to be bulkier when packing) along with many other readily available household items, which can be replaced with more compact/lighter/more efficient/more durable etc. gear as you gain experience.
There are exceptions, like some domestic kettles, for example, where you would probably need a lower-wattage version. (I notice you have elecric coolbox on your original list, so presumably will have added a properly-designed tent-specific Electric Hook-Up lead).
everything else is an extra, remember you have to pack each and every item. The rule of thumb is, the more you take the less you go.
So get your list ready, Start with minimal and it will grow with you from there.

Major requirement,Tent Pegs, please don't fall into the trap of taking the ones which are provided with the tent, you will need a good selection to cover differing ground conditons. You may also wish to think about some form of heating,as it can occassionally get a little chilly at night.

Forgot to add welcome to the forum Foote Family. If you can't get the advice and help you need from all the good people on here (who have helped me enormously over the past few months) I don't think it's out there.

Thank you for all your advice. Now onto the purchase of a tent!! Think we have found the one for us: Khyam Montreal. However, having trouble finding the bedroom dimensions. I notice someone on here advising that a double bedroom does not necessarily mean that a double airbed will fit. Wonder if anyone can offer advice please?
