I've got a couple of fairly large sized tents and, although we've been camping for only the odd time now and then in the past, last year really gave us the bug - big time! So this year we are gonna go as many times as we can. But we've only ever used 2 camp sites and luckily they've never been bothered about the size of the tent.
So, I'm wanting 2 know - generally, whats the size of a tent pitch? I'm also assuming that not every site has the same size do they?
It depends what sort of site you like going to Karen... The 'commercial' (holiday village) type sites generally have a fairly uniform ten metre square (or smaller) set pitch size...
On the smaller 'farm field' type sites, it depends on the season, ie: if it's school holidays, the tents/caravans can be quite tightly packed; but out of school holiday periods, you can 'spread out a bit'...
We usually prefer C.& C.C. C.S.s (certificated sites) and are lucky enough to be able to go during the quiet times (between school holidays). Quite often, we've been the only tent in the field for a few days!... So I guess it's a case of where and when you want to go, that can often decide your pitch size...
With the Aspen being big we always give the footprint area of the tent when we book and, so far, no problems. A lot of sites say to inform them if you have a large tent so they can allocate a larger pitch. The only possible problem is not advising a site of the pitch size you need and rocking up to find you cannot fit the tent in.
No set size for a pitch - depends on the site, the layout and how many they want to pack in (or not).

We must be experts - we are out standing in our chosen fields!
I posted this on the "large tents" thread in the UK Campsite subforum a few weeks ago - it's probably worth repeating here...
In the Camping & Caravan Club magazine this month there was a question about "big" tents on C&CC sites - their response is
"In general, a standard Club pitch measures about 11m x 11m, although the layout of some Sites may creat non standard pitches. To fit a standard pitch the width of any unit, including any awning or annex you use, must not exceed 5m.
At this width, there can be a 3m wide space either side of your unit. This, combined with the 3m space on the neighbouring pitchs, goes to create the Club's required 6m firebreak between units. Length is not usually a problem because the access road can provide the firebreak gap."
So....that is the logic for C&CC sites - I'd imagine that's one of the bigger pitches you'd find around? Many sites are of course not concerned about leaving gaps for firebreaks.

I've seen one or two sites in July/August, where the guylines of neighbouring tents were laced together tighter than a pair of boots... Funnily enough though, you always see a decent gap between the caravans...

I read that too and confused me big time. Our XXL Excelsior is 7.5x3.5 so should easily fit on a 11x11, but then they say it shouldn't be bigger than 5m wide....Really confuses me...Is this daft marketing, and are they actually saying their pitches ARE NOT 11x11 but 5x11 instead?
Jean-Paul, The pitches are 11m x 11m but they are asking for 3m firebreak down each side so that leaves 5m for your tent down the middle of the pitch. (3+5+3=11)
You can do whatever you like (within reason) with the 3m down each side.
As your tent is 3.5m, you should fit in no problem.
