Does anyone know what the minimum distance should be between tents? We went away to what would have been a lovely site this weekend but the owners cramped people in and because everyone had had to pay in advance for minimum three nights at £25 per night eveyone was stuck. What's more the managers were nowhere to be seen!
The tents were touching each other in lots of places on the field and you could hardly move for guide ropes and cars.
If you do know please tell me!

Thanks for letting me know. loads of the tents on the site we went to were easily one foot away from each other in places. Real shame cos it's just greed packing people in like that. Maybe it made it warmer though!
Complain LOUDLY!!! At £25 per night they shouldn't be allowed to get away with that! Their local council grants them their site license they are you first post of call. Tell the campsite you will be making a formal complaint to the council, health and safety and anyone who cares to listen!!!

I hate this kind of thing. It puts me off sites for ever. I went to Scott’s Farm in Wittering (a place I will no longer go to for a couple of reasons) and tents were crammed in as far as the eye could see. There was no chance of getting your car out if you needed to and walking was impossible because tents were guy-rope to guy-rope. Tents were even sharing tent pegs they were so close.
Camping is riding a wave of popularity at the moment and too many site owners seem hell bent on making money while the sun is shining, so to say. These are sites that aren’t run by camping enthusiasts, but greedy people jumping on the camping bandwagon.
For me the quicker this camping fad ends the better.
Whoops, sorry about that. I don’t think I’ve had enough coffee this morning. Still, it really gets my goat.
i was at reighton sands this weekend and we had tents that were less than a foot away from ours, when i complained and told the park manager about the problem he said that all campers are advised of how close they can pitch there tent, if the campers in question had any sence they would know that there should be approx 6mtrs distance between tents(it tells you this in your tent instructions usualy) anyway after even more complaining i was compensated for my problem with a FREE yes FREE weekend away at anytime i would like, im going to avoid the bank holiday tho as it seems like they just want your money and cram the best part of 200 tents into a small field on the edge of a cliff

Im new to camping & am yet to go..... So what is EHU?
Also is it better to join say the Camping & Caravaning Club & get a better site etc, or what do you all suggest.
My partner & I dont have kids & dont want a site with a club/pub etc on it, just to be able to get away & have some piece & quiet for a few days will be heaven, any suggestions, I live in Essex so dont want a long drive, as Ive got to get the hang of putting up my t/t......
Extremely interesting thread and as a mainly solo camper with small tent and scooter, I'm constantly thinking that in the high season I'm going to be put in the corner next to some huge vehicle!
I'm lucky this year that I have a lot of time to go camping.I've been away a few time already and have had no space problems.
I've just booked two weeks at the same site and just hope I'm a reasonable distance from my "neighbour".Trouble is having booked and arrived it's difficult to do much about packed tents etc. I'd probably take pictures and post them on the web!
I've heard some members say that the main purpose in booking EHU is to get a decent pitch and the electrical benefits are secondary issues.
I can understand that, and if I was camping with a car I would book EHU every time.
Hi - can I suggest that everyone hwo has had this experience of this unsafe crowding please
a) name and shame that site on here and add a review to that site's listing too so that we can all be warned away
b) as already mentioned, report concerns to the local council who grant the site its licence.
Hitting these unscrupulous site owners in the pocket where it hurts is the only way to stop this. We know that collectively UKCS can be a powerful force, so lets use it!!
Don’t start me off on another rant. This is my biggest dislike about camping. Pokey toilets and luke warm water I can cope with, but being hemmed in on all sides by tents really ruins the occasion for me.
One of the problems is when you either book or turn up, pay and drive onto a site that is packed. You have the, “where do we pitch”, moment. You end up driving round and round the site looking, getting stressed. It’s meant to be a peaceful break in the country for goodness sake. Not a trip to a battery farm.
Breezeblock and ianork what you say about EHU is dead interesting coz on this site there were non EHU tents actually pitched IN BETWEEN the EHU pitches and so they were I think actually touching in places.
Funny thing is the owners were quick enough to get back to us when we were trying to book online but they can't seem to reply to my e-mail about where they were at the weekend and why it was so horribly overcrowded.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
