Welcome to UK Camp Site, Loader.

Presume you mean for use in a tent; you need to get one specifically made for the purpose with the necessary RCB protection. Most camping shops sell them, have a look at this to give you an idea:

 From CCC Outdoors £54

You can get one with 3 sockets which is more useful but costs more.

The only type of hook-up to use is the proper camping ones.

Either of these are what is approved on most sites.

 triple socket  single socket

If it does not look like either of these do not get one. These are the ones that are made for use in large tents and trailer tents.

Triple socket £89.50 single £54.50 from Towsure

If you bought one of the single socket ones, is it okay to use an extension/3 socket adapter with it?

My builder has said he will make me a hook up, he is an experienced camper and as he doesnt live in Bristol is currently camped outside our house in his campervan! Even so, I am still wary of him making me one. Is there a specific question I could ask him about it, or should I just not let him do it?

Hi Tracey, as the trailing socket would not be splashproof I would not be happy in doing this myself, there is no price on safety when family's are concerned. Have a look in the 26 of the site, I think I saw a triple socket ehu as above for sale at around £70.

Again I would say get the proper tool for the job, these things are made to protect you and your family and many sites are now doing occasional checks on hook up leads and if they are not up to the recognised standard the will insist on you not using it. There are others on the site who will be able to quote you the exact parts of an ehu that you should have and why. I personally would not use a homemade variation in a tent. Better to do without and be safe!

I do exactly that when camping in France, but I actually have the 3 socket mobile mains. With fridge, freezer, lights, laptop, battery charger & phone chargers, it doesn't take long to use 3 sockets. If the was a problem with anything plugged into the extension lead, the unit would trip anyway. Just dont have long chains of extensions leads, but you wouldn't do that at home either.

Yes Jim, if one of the sockets on the exstension lead was damp and there was a risk of shock, the unit should (and not would) trip. You hope.

Yep, nothing in life is certain apart from death and taxes. The unit should be tested before use and I also test mine occasionally while camping, but I don't get too paranoid about it not working.

It's the same with the brakes on my car for example - they should work, and I do check them myself or have the guys where I work have a look at them very occasionally, but I don't check them every day or every time I use the car.

When your in your house you only have the trip at the fuseboard to rely on and still use all the skts on the ring . I think that as long as you are not leaving it in a position where it will get drenched you should be fine.

Loader fromyour other thread ,you are off to Sandy Balls you could always hire a hook up there to try it out to see. Only problem is they dont have loads of them and its on a first come first served basis. Oh and sometimes you only get a one socket one. But certainly only get a proper one with trip on it. You can get them for a good price from Essex camping.

Bit more than just the trip at the fuseboard, lots of other safety measures in place.

In fact one of the main principals behind electrical safety in the UK is that the failure of one compaonent (such as the trip at the fuseboard) should not in itself present a significant hazard.

Trips can and do fail to operate.

Hi Everyone

I bought a EHU off e-bay, It is the heavy duty orange cable and has had a four gang socket fitted on the other end. I think it was originally a caravan EHU but the where you plug it into the caravan has been taken off, there is NO cut out switch fitted on it, but I have tried it out at an electrians shop and he said it was ok to use, and he goes camping, and has done for years.

Could or should I buy one of those plug in circiut breakers just to be sure?

Regards

 Steve.
