I used to live in Belgium. The coast is ok, plenty of sand etc, but not really the best part of the country. I'd go to the Ardennes out of choice. As I recall there's a dirty great tram line running the entire length of the coast making it a little bit harder to get onto the beach, esp with kids. A proper tram, not a cute tourist one.

We have been to Bredene now for 3 times in a row. It is just outside Ostend. The people there are so friendly. The campsites are within the town area so you can easily walk to the bars etc, tram along the coast, the sand-dunes and beach but it is still quiet and laid back. There are lots of lovely campsites, we stayed at Camping Warande and the staff there are so welcoming.

Gandspette to Duinrell is about a 4.5 hour drive (roughly 220 miles).

With all the facilities at Duinrell for your kids why not just skip Belgium and go straight for Wassenaar?

You could stop somewhere for lunch like Blankenberge or Brugges then head on to arrive late afternoon at Duinrell.

Belgian motorways are generally good and not too busy. No tolls. From Gandspette you are in a good position to get onto the motorway network and go direct.

We were in Bredene last year and stayed here

It is a small site with a childrens play area. great showers and not much else but a very well kept and quiet site close enough to the beach, resturants, shops etc but far enough away to be peacefull.

Bredene itself is lively and touristy with souvenir shops, bars etc but the coastline is pretty and the beaches are sandy.

There is a tram running along the beach but there is safe beach access under the road through tunnels.

The tram is not expensive and is a cheap and fast way of exploring the coastal towns. A free guide is available either from the tram stations but the camp site owner gave us one.

The guides alsp show places to visit, attractions etc.One place that is a must is Brugges. Gorgeous city and less than an hours drive from the site.

If you want to go a little further towards Holland, and dont mind not being near a beach then this is a good site. The  area offers nothing but the site itself is great. The pitches are not marked so you get whatever space you need. The shower blocks are great, the childrens play area is excellant and there is a snack bar, pub, supermarket and the best thing of all.......... the water area. If you click on Waterparadijs, you will see a fantastic (and large) outdoor, manmade swimming pool with 2 large slides. Perfect for swimming and  inflatable boats/toys. One of the slides is wide enough to go down on an inflatable dingy! Our son loved it !

Prices for the site are excellant and they dont take bookings. They always have space as the site is huge. Staff are friendly and one night when the people in the next tent decided to play loud music, have the tv loud AND shout , we called the owner and he was there in less than 5 minutes asking them , politely, to lower the noise level as it was past midnight and they were not the only people on the site.. sorted !

Wherever you decide to stay, i am sure you will have a great time.

Angie

PS. If you need translation, just holler and I will try, If i cant then I am married to a man that can lol

We satyed at Gandspette for as a stop over to/from the SOF last year. My impressions of Gandspette that it would be well worth a longer stay the next year. Speaking to someone who had stayed for 7 nights, the area seemed to offer plenty to do. So are we saying that Belgium is not worth a visit then :(

I was rather hoping that someone who had toured the Northern coastal area, could offer a recommended 2/3 night stoppover -

Belgium is definately worth a visit !

The first link i put in is in Bredene and a nice site as long as you dont want an all singing all dancing site.

The owner works all day everyday cleaning, mowing etc. Never seen such a tidy campsite !

The beach and livelyness are about a 10 min stroll  and the tram station is less.

Hi Angie,

Thanks for these recommendations, the site at Bredene looks to be in a fantastic location, and is just what I was after - an interesting 2/3 night stop over.

Cheers - Paul

Hey Paul,

Camping Rietveld is a good site. Not expensive either !

As I said before, apart from the immaculate shower block (with motion operated showers !) and a kids play area, it is purely a place to camp but totally immaculate. The owner does speak several languages (including English) so there will be  no problems in communication.

The beach is gorgeous but be aware that there is a nudist beach area. Not a problem for us adults but I have to say that our 14 year old son didnt know where to look lol.

There are 2 mini golf courses, bike hire, supermarkets, bars etc all close by and even closer is a supermarket with fresh bread every morning .

Glad to be of help :)

Angie
