Can anyone recommend a Portable freesat system, would prefer a HD system really but any system thats easy to set up would be fine...i have looked on various web sites btw for advise but i am looking for personal recommendation from ukcampsite people.
After having aerial trouble in the past, I was talking to a salesman at our local caravan centre and he was singing the praisers of a satalite dish, said I would get a reception anywhere in the country. (Not true) So I bought the Ross system, not from the caravan centre as to expensive but from B & Q at £79, not the HD one. It's been out twice with me since and I've not been able to get a picture either time. One, to many mountains and 2 to many tree's. I even bought a new compass thinking I was pointing in the wrong direction and made it a tripod. I do get a lovely reception from my spare bedroom on 240v though. It's not been out yet this year as I've only been on rallies with no EHU and my 12v TV has died. I will be taking it with me when I go to Cornwall so will try again but on a 240v TV.
Just picked up a Humax Foxsat Freesat HD PVR, for camping use handy for time shifting your viewing so you can watch later in the day, and unlike Sky+ that will not work without a satellite signal, the Humax will let you view recorded programs, even without the dish connected, very handy for overnight stops etc.
Also you can store Std def recordings to memory stick, another handy feature.

Being pedantic that system is not a freesat system it is a Free to air system. As I understand it is you will get the same channels but not the EPG just now and next. If I'm wrong about this I'm sure someone will correct me.
Aldi had a Free to air Ross HD system for £59.99 12v and mains a few weeks ago may be still a few floating arround the shops,

Use your compass before pitching to ensure a clear sight to SSE. [no trees, buildings etc.
Thanks Mike.. As I said in the original post I have been on that site you have suggested.
I am looking for recommendations for receivers.
What receiver do you use mike and is it one you would recommend?
Cheers
Mark
Maplins have some good deals on satalite systems for caravans, I have one for a few years now, powered from the 110 W battery & linked up to my 60 Watt solar panel, works a treat as long as you dont hammer it!Also you can tune the tv into the satelite through the free sat box, switch everthing on, put volume up, go into info, press button 1, you should get a low buzzing noise, go outside & move the sat dish 28% east for Astra satelite. When you pick the satelite up the pitch from the tel goes up like a tuning fork the highest pitch, is when you are dead on satelite, tighten dish up, go check to tv on the screen you will see signal strenth, press exit on the freeview selector box, thats it, Its sounds complicated but you soon get the hang of & its picture perfect, but dont have trees or large obstructions infront of the dish as it wont work.
Look for a sky installer parked in the street. (Vans are brightly painted) They will usually do a cash deal for a 2nd hand sky box and dish, LNB, cable and all you need to get started. (Expect to pay around £50/60 for the lot)
I have the Comag model, never had any prob`s with getting all programmes from Astra 2,but as with all portable systems, the LNB arm has to be perfectly horizontal.
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
Pete.
get the one from b&q (ross) i got one at the end of last year they were only £29 then but they are not HD but once you get used to setting it up they are great. you need a satellite finder ,spirit level, tripod ,compass a few wedges for levelling the tripod up and some pegs to fasten the tripod to the ground to stop the wind blowing it over otherwise the LNB bracket breaks as it is only plastic then read the intructions on www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk
good luck you'll need a bit of patience at first but once you've done it a few times its fairly easy

Mark we take our Skybox and I use an old domestic Dish on an old camera tripod. Used this kit successfully all over UK & Europe.
Good advice from oxter.
