My girlfriend and I decided to get back in to camping. This time we weren't going to squat in a supermarket tent and face sleepless nights on thin groundsheets. We were going to do it in comfort and style.

This tent is a palace. It has little touches we were looking for like meshes on the doors (bugs out, breeze in), central hook for a lantern, lots of space and a bedroom big enough for a queen-size blow up bed.

Erecting it is straightforward - we're no professionals (and not very tall either) and can put it up in about 45 minutes.

Putting it away was a bit tougher and the bugger still doesn't want to get in the bag as neatly as it came out the first time!

We extended our tent with the porch unit, which adds some good utility space but we haven't mastered putting it up properly yet. Perhaps we're just not tall enough.

We've only used it twice and it's so far ticked all the boxes. It's massive, well ventilated, not blown down and not let in a single drop of rain -- all during the easter weekend. What more could we ask for?

We bought the tent on impulse last year. We had been camping many years ago when our eldest was only a nipper, he's 21 now. So I had lost my touch with camping. However, the Kalahari 8 Elite was a very easy to put up and considering the weekend we went away we stayed on the East coast and had 30 mph+ winds, it stayed in great condition. It has two inner 'bedroom' compartments and this also leaves a decent sized living space in the middle too. There is an opening to feed your EHU through without it getting ruined and also has a great cable tidy in order to put your light up too. All in all I am very pleased with the tent.

As I mentioned earlier, with us being fairly new back to the camping game, we still found the tent very easy to put away into the bags it came in.

Copy/paste of the review I left on the Go Outdoors site a couple of days ago.

I bought the Kalahari Elite 8 after doing days of research online into which tent to buy. I couldnt afford an inflatable tent and didnt want to get anything too cheap either.

This tent is MASSIVE! Over 20ft long and 10ft wide! I'm 6ft and can easily stand up in every part of the tent with the exception of the back of the sleeping pods where I have to bend just a little. Despite that it can easily be erected by 2 people and I think at a pinch possibly by a single person (though I havent tried that!). Pitching time including guys is around 30ish minutes for 2 people.

The first time I used it I went away to Aberystwyth for a week. It rained every day, was very windy but extremely hot and muggy. Like all tents it is uncomfortable in heat but you can open all the vents and doors to help.

The tent did not let in a single drop of water and stood up to both the torrential rain and high winds without any issues at all. I really cant fault it for that.

Second time I used it - again torrential rain and high winds and again no problem at all!

The tent is spacious and comfortable though I wouldnt want to put 8 people in there. For 2 or 4 though loads of room!

Ok nothing is perfect and this tent has a couple of minor but annoying issues.

The first is that there is only 1 cable entry point so you have to make sure the tent is the right way around. Not as easy as you think as it is difficult to find the entry when the tent is down and laid out, and of course you have to turn it around if it's facing the wrong way. This is especially an issue if like me you have the porch as you'll probably want to ensure there is electricity in the porch.

Secondly (and related) is that the very useful lantern mounting point on the ceiling has a fantastic cable management system - but it only goes down one side of the tent - towards the cable entry point. There are many reasons why the electrical supply wont necessarily be right there so it would be really useful if it had the velcro tabs going both ways.

That aside, cant really fault the tent at all and I'm looking forward to getting loads of use out of it next year.

We purchased this tent in August this year, we got it in a sale in readiness for the bank holiday. We've used it twice now in all weathers and it has stood up considerably well. We chose this tent for the high hydro-static rating,( which is 4000mm and not 3000mm as stated in the manufacturers write up?) and for the space and porch that came in the bundle, it was good value. The living space is just right, housing a couple of chairs , tables and fridge etc. There is only 2 of us and a Labrador, but we like space. We use one end as a large bedroom and the other end as a toilet and storage area. The porch serves as a kitchen and space for the dog. It is quite difficult to fit to the tent but once up it is a great addition. We have managed to put the tent up in about 40 min, it is quite simple, as is taking it down. Really happy with it, so far.

Great tent. Has withstood a Scottish storm and a Norfolk one this summer. Head room is great if you're a tall feller, as I am, and the inside is very spacious.

2 people can put it up in less than half an hour once you know what you're doing.

In hindsight, I wish we'd bought the bundle as having seen others with the porch in place, it really does make a huge difference if you're going to be anywhere for more than a couple of nights and where cooking outdoors might be an issue (in our case because of midges!)

Just one minor quibble - the poles are under a lot of strain because of the design. It does provide a very strong and robust frame but 2 of ours have cracked (in admittedly pretty extreme weather and not enough to affect the stability as only discovered when we were de-camping). That said, they are easy enough to replace.

I bought this tent 2 weeks ago from Go Outdoors. I received the bundle pack which included the tent, a porch, the carpet and the footprint groundsheet. Total price was 450.

In our eagerness to try it out we visited the Lakes last weekend and were greeted with 2 days of constant rain. On the 2nd night we experienced approx. 50 lightning strikes and thunderstorms over a 2 hour period, watching our new tent from the safety of the campsites' outdoor eating area. We were amazed that the tent withstood everything the weather threw at it and was probably as good a test it will ever receive in our ownership. Amazing quality!

The footprint groundsheet was superb and kept the bottom of the tent completely dry. If you can stretch to the 45 to buy one it is well worth it! The porch adds a kitchen/wet area which means all the living space is inside the larger inner tent. We had some other groundsheets from previous camping trips and again is worthwhile for the porch area. We erected both ends of the bedroom compartments, but we slept with our 2 young kids in one end only, leaving the other end for storage or in future as an extra living space. There are pockets and vents everywhere, and the carpet keeps your feet both dry and warm.

The only slight downside is if you only have 2 adults and small children when erecting the tent as it's a little awkward, as there are 5 poles to hold up. This is not a negative on the tent design, as I suppose they are expecting more than 4 people to be in it.

In summary, I can already see this tent will be a fantastic buy for our camping needs. It's already proved itself in bad weather and I can't wait to explore it's other benefits in finer weather.I would certainly recommend this tent to anyone wanting a bit more space and glamour to their tenting experience

A great family sized tent with loads of space for the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 children). Easy to erect including the additional porch. Stood up well to gales in the Lakes and no problems with rain. The addition of the storage pockets in the main living area and down the sides of the bedrooms is a great touch and very useful for storing all the bits and pieces.

We use the porch for cooking and eating but we still have plenty of space to fit a table and 4 chairs in the living space. All in all a great family tent.

I love this tent. It is huge, we have it for a family of 4, but used it with 5 kids this last week and worked brilliantly. My husband insisted on this instead of the 6-man tent (which I thought would be fine) as he can stand up properly in all parts, and can lie down without being cramped when we have one end to ourselves. He is 6'1'' and so sleeping in tents is a big issue normally for him. It is simple to put up once you know what you are doing - 2 people needed (me an my 12 yr old daughter coped fine though), and an extra person can reduce time taken. Only needs one person to take down. I wish the inners were a little darker for night time, but this doesn't seem much different to other tents. I did break a pole section the first time I put it up in a gale, but getting it replaced at Go Outdoors was easy and worked fine next time. Would certainly recommend.

We own the 2013 blue version of this tent and it is excellent! It is quick & easy to put up and has never let us down. There's loads of space for a family of 4 (especially with the porch added) and the carpet makes it cosy. We have camp beds that fit in the sleeping pods well and still leave room to move around.

We have experienced some really rough weather in this tent - both high wind and lots of rain. It has never let us down, always staying very dry and rigid. Tents around us got flattened but we managed to stay intact with no problems.

I would certainly recommend this tent. It is practical, affordable (especially when Go Outdoors have one of their 'offers') and easy to use.

We have last year's blue version and have had the tent just over a year now. It has been our sanctuary on seven trips ranging from one night to a week, and I still love it! (and miss it when we camp in our other tent) I wonder if the novelty will ever wear off. We are a family of two adults and two primary aged kids and it's perfect for the four of us, but we've had up to 6 people in it when camping with friends without feeling cramped. We chose it primarily for it's vis a vis design which means we can have a 4 man bedroom at one end of the tent and the kids can have a 2 man bedroom each at the other. This gives everyone their privacy, especially as we hang both dividing curtains together between the kids as one alone can be a bit see through in daylight. The central lounge is plenty big enough for all our chairs plus a blanket in the middle to play board games etc. On. It has loads of pockets on both bedrooms which means you don't have little odds and ends cluttering the floor and is perfect for keeping gadgets in while charging from the EHU. It comes with one set of king poles for putting the door up as a porch. We keep meaning to bring our set of king poles from our other tent so as to put both doors up, but actually now we have a canopy (non matching one) we don't really need to. I love all the little details such as mesh on all the doors / windows to keep it bug free, the way it vents all the way round and none of the vents need pegging because they clips to the poles. It comes with enough hooks etc. To hang things from and set up bungees for drying towels etc.

Manufacturer's Description

An updated version of Hi Gear's popular tunnel tent, perfect for relaxed family camping holidays.

The Hi Gear Kalahari 8 Elite is a spacious and stable tunnel-style tent with two large partitionable bedrooms in a face-to-face layout, roomy enough for you, your family and all your gear.

Pre-attached high-visibility guylines, reduced pole sleeves, and sewn-in polyethylene groundsheet make pitching the tent quick and easy.

The bedrooms comfortably sleep four at each end of the tent, in 2+2 inners with breathable polyester walls. Bedrooms can also be removed, to give you extra storage space, or room for dirty gear.

The large living space has two large windows and hanging storage pockets to help keep it tidy, organised and liveable. Multiple vents along the roof help air flow throughout the tent.

The sewn-in groundsheet combined with the fire-retardant polyester flysheet (with 4000mm hydrostatic head) give you a fully sealed and ventilated internal environment, so you'll be completely protected from draughts and sustained downpours. The two doors can be propped and extended out to use for extra shelter from rain or stretching the space out for more room if it's sunny.

Other useful features include the water-repellent zips and an electrical cable access point.
