Hi all
Does anybody know what size rims and tires we can fit under our trailer? It is still on the original ones but I find it somewhat low. I know that I cannot raise it to much because of the leg support, but I have extra plates to put under the legs.
I would stay with the original sizes as there is a limited amount of room in the wheel boxes and the tyres need replacing every 5-7 years as the side walls perish.
We bought it a few years ago, but I never thought of looking at the tires. I know, big mistake.
The problem is that here is Iceland I cannot find the correct size. But I see in the wheel arch that there is room for a both wider and taller tire.
The box will be bigger to allow for the wheel to move up on it's suspension and also for the tyre to flex left to right. If you get a bigger wheel and tyre you might find that it wears through the wheel box and shreds your tyres. We have no idea what wheels and tyres are available where you are and you need to find the correct fitting to fit the hub as well. Perhaps a local tyre fitter could advise you.
When this trailer tent was produced it was fitted with a rubber suspension system which is common in Europe for small trailers and caravans, it was intended for use on smooth tarmac roads rather than the rugged roads which you will encounter in Iceland. If you Google Alko trailer suspension or Indispension units you should find many examples of this type of suspension unit.
One of the American or Australian off road trailers might be more suitable for your environment.
Sorry for the late reply. Completely forgot it.
I just googled it, and it does make a lot of sense this suspension.
Most of the roads that we drive to go camping is alright, but from time to time we need to go in a smaller backroad.
But I will talk to a local tire shop and get some new tires and rims. Thank you for your help.
