Somebody is pulling your leg.
Just make certain your gas bottles are turned off before you board.

This myth of no LPG on ferries has been circulating for years, and rears it's ugly head from time to time when some ill informed type spreads the myth afresh!

You CAN take LPG cylinders on a ferry, there are limits and conditions though. It falls under 'Transport of Dangerous Goods' regulations.

Each ferry company words it in their own particular way it seems, and often buries it deep in T & Cs, but generally hinges around Max of 3 cylinders, with a Max combined weight of 47Kg. Gas must be turned off at cylinder valve.

Single source info: https://www.ferriestofrance.co.uk/advice/prohibited-items-onboard-ferries. You can hunt down the individual ferry company T & Cs if you want to double check your particular ferry company.

Channel Tunnel actually allows slightly more gas, but otherwise much the same: https://www.leshuttle.com/uk-en/support/articles/gas-used-for-domestic-services-76........

We've been taking gas cylinders to France on ferries for decades, mostly very obviously, so not 'smuggled', and NEVER a single problem.

Can't help with Ireland I'm afraid, but never heard of any issues from those that have done it.
