Not overly familiar with Trailer Tents/Folding Campers, so can't ID your particular unit from photo, but I can tell you it's looking heavily corroded at that attachment point! The damage may have come about simply because not enough sound structure left to take the load, rather than any fault of the person who borrowed it!
Don't know what lies behind the panel, but guessing something structural like timber/steel/alloy framework that would be the true loadbearing member, thin sheet 'cosmetic' external panel is unlikely to be all there is to support any load bearing point!
Like a lot of corrosion issues, what lies below the surface can often be far worse than minor external signs.
Hopefully someone far more familiar with your unit (would be useful if you ID'd it in your profile info, or OP!) can give you a better idea of what's behind the panel and what the remedial work required would be.
