Might be worth having a look at the Satellite for Caravans website. I haven't got satellite so not needed to use it myself but he does seem to have a lot of advice on there.
Thanks for all the comments, will have a play around with it during the week and see what i come up with.
I can't see that Lidl or Aldi would be allowed to sell a unit that isn't capable of doing the job, i think its just the instructions are not very comprehensive and for someone like me that aint good lol I even need instructions for a can opener!
I would say stick with it until you get the hang of ,It realy is not as complicated as it first appears to be .I have had my Aldi kit for about 4 years and have exellent results with it ,its probably one of the best value for money buys that I have made.
I have used one of these for 4 years now and the trick as previously stated is small movements of the dish. Adjust the dish so it is just off being vertical and then point the dish to 120 degrees S/W and move the dish sideways VERY slowly in small movements towards 150 degress SW until you pick up a signal. A sat finder does help alot, mine has one built into the sat receiver which omits a tone which gets higher as the signal is picked up and the quality improves.
I tested mine at home first by using my SKY dish as point of reference to ensure that the complete kit did work.
I would also invest in a decent tripod to mount the dish to ensure that it is stable and make sure the dish has a clear view e.g. no caravans or tress blocking its line of sight. The first few times I tried I nearly gave up but now have it set up in about 10 mins.
I've got one of the cheap maplins ones, only used it a couple of times, was too much fiddling around for the very little tv we watch when away in the van.
it just sits in the attic gathering dust these days.
We've now got a tv with built in freeview which keeps the kids occupied on rainy days.
I bought a 'Ross' 60cm dish and didgy box system from B&Q. £25 reduced from £50. I set it up in my garden and it took a long time to figure it out and patience to get it working. I used a small compass and a finder similar to 'Sterlings' (Second reply to this thread). The compass was £1.99 and finder £6, ebay inc postage. I mounted it on a piece of wood 2' x 1'6''. Fastened down with 4 tent pegs.
I took it to Haggerston Castle, Northumberland last weekend and after putting the system together it took me about 20 minutes to get a perfect picture with all the freeview channels. The 'homework had paid off.
If you have not got time to read the instructions properly and lots of patience, buy a very expensive kit or use DVDs. It is not easy.
just took ours back to aldi for a refund total and utter crap ,wasted a day and a half trying to get a picture ,that would ruin my holiday totally ,i'll stick to a ariel and freeview on the telly in future
there's some good info about the same thing in the camping and caravanning equipment thread under the post , satelite kit ,, some guy in that one seems to know his stuff ,, i've been doing a bit of wandering out of my usual threads ,, finding allsorts ,,
