The gas struts would be good, the beds are undeniably heavy without, but I can open and close the beds on my non-gas strut 2010 Olympe on my own without any great problem - and whilst I'm tall and reasonably strong, I'm not exactly Mr Universe! I wouldn't rule one out without struts until you've tried one.
