Hi Kelper. Aha yes it's that photo : what a nice shot.
Are the bikes on a maxxRaxx mounted on the towbar? Does the Passat have self levelling ?

Worked a treat and I had no problems taking it down to Bordeaux.

I also put an old blanket between the bikes so that they didn't scratch each other.

Good luck

Are you still using the carpet bike carrier? Would it be bad if it rains?
I'm thinking of making one out of thin ply, foam with tie down straps. Then carpet to go between the bikes. Or maybe a maxxRaxx. My Mondeo is lowered & stiffened though, though it can tow a caravan OK. To me it seems neater to put the bikes on the FC if at all possible. MRT what did you end up using for the bike rack?

I have used the carpet and it has rained on the journey, its not a problem as I just laid the carpet under the FC when we got to site - OK it didn't completely dry out and I had to put it on the FC wet at the end but the transit cover is waterproof and I wasn't planning on using the carpet indoors when I got back ;)

Hi Wurzel ... yes the MaxxRaxx is mounted on the towbar. No, that model of Passat does not have self levelling.
I level by spreading the load.

Hello stixJumbo. Have you had any problems with the waterproof cover when using the carpet and bikes method? I will probably give it a go myself, just the waterproof cover I do not want to damage.

Have Maxxrax and is really good. Love that you can drop the rack and still get access to the boot.

For me 4 bikes was on the limit of hitch weight with trailer, masking rear view and taking longer to load.

Built my own rack for the trailer and used conventional roof rack bike holders now very simple to load/ unload. Better rear visibility and tows better

Right I wrapped the bikes in a carpet 'parcel' and strapped to the top of the fc. It worked OK but I could not stop edges of the carpet from flapping in the wind and the airstream also has a tendency to get underneath the bikes&carpet causing the whole lot to move backwards. It worked OK but I've bought a roof mount Thule carrier instead.
