Difficult to say without knowing what electrics you have.

The usual arrangement is to have a charger that, when hooked up, this continually supplies the battery, which in turn runs the 12v curcuits. (Lights, water pump, radio etc).  Without a battery in place,  the circuit will not be complete, and so things will not work. (as you discovered)

You can also have a 12v transformer arrangement as you suggest.

In any case, a battery is a good idea, as then you don't need the 240v hook up.

Probably, the best thing to do is pop into your local camping/caravanning outlet and ask them to check what you have and havn't got.

Buy a battery! They aren't that dear and everything will work as its meant to. If you have proper mains electric the lights should still work if you put the switch by the power supply in the right place. There are two places where this might be one by the door with a red/green gauge and it says some thing like car/van and in the bed box behind the battery box where it says charger on off.
