Difficult to say without knowing what electrics you have.
The usual arrangement is to have a charger that, when hooked up, this continually supplies the battery, which in turn runs the 12v curcuits. (Lights,water pump, radio etc). Without a battery in place, the circuit will not be complete, and so things will not work. (as you discovered)
You can also have a 12v transformer arrangement as you suggest.
In any case, a battery is a good idea, as then you don't need the 240v hook up.
Probably, the best thing to do is pop into your local camping/caravanning outlet and ask them to check what you have and havn't got.
