what about the vinyl 'laminate' like they have in folding campers? looks neat and easily maintained.

the wife thought of that but she wanted to use the stuff we have spare in the loft its very colourful .i forgot you can get laminate vinyl

You may be able to pick up a rather nice cushioned flooring, as you will only need a small amount. ask around some shops for offcuts...

The vinyl laminate is slightly cushioned and warm underfoot too.
