What a horrendous experience, glad they were alright. Our very first time camping resulted in our frame tent being blown flat to the ground on our second night in Wales. It was the kindness shown by other campers and the fun the family had on the first day that converted us to camping. I hope they were insured and can continue this normally trouble-free lifestyle if they still wish to.

it was windy in places,funny how these things always happen when its nightime..!

last time we were out in gale force winds i put some rachet straps over our camper roof,  from under the beds,   it stops the roof lifting and flapping..

the wind was horendous friday as some people will no there was a boy blown into a river 5 mins away from us our daughter used to goto school with him and he has not yet been found we have been looking aswell as the police but still no sign will be bk out there today to carry on looking for him

OMG - how scary - and just TERRIBLE about that little boy. It is hard to believe the wind can blow people over but my son was blown off our raised patio and dumped 6 ft across the garden when he was little - we laugh about it now but the wind really is so dangerous.

Our Khyam XXXL was totalled in high winds - we had camped by a wall - stupid in hindsight! - and the gust came straight in, hit the wall and DOWN on the top of the tent, breaking all four joints - I was alone in it at the time and had to hold up the whole thing until my husband meandered back from washing up -  mended and sold the tent quite quickly - never trusted it after that!

That is absolutely awful about the little lad. My sympathies to the bereft parents.

As for the roof off your caravan, I know the Teversal site.  The staff there are absolutely wonderful, nothing is too much trouble for them.

I was there in February (remember it being -5C) but it was windy then as it is at the top of a hill.  I use the "awning straps" mentioned by another member, and they are a handy piece of kit if the wind threatens to cause damage. 

I have been out on an exposed hillside, with a Dandy, took down the awning, and threw the straps over the Unit. No problem at all, she weathered everything thrown at her. 

Commiserations to the people who have had their caravan destroyed.
