To say it has nothing to do with goverments is wrong so what if a barrel hits $200 its OUR goverment making the price of a litre so high with the tax just look at the price in USA/AUSTRALIA/SUADI ect theres is low. Why cos there goverment doesnt tax it to death, but hey were Brithish and we wont moan or fight back stiff upper lip and all that rubish. Stand up and shout if we all did they would have to listen.
Rant over sorry.
With crude heading towards $200 a barrel, I think it is going to get really bad. In the last year it has risen from $80 to over $120 a barrel - still nowhere near $200. That means that our litre of petrol is going to cost over £2 in the near future. (£120 to fill our car.)
This has nothing to do with governments, it is down to producers keeping the stuff expensive by producing less. They know it is going to run out, so they are maximising their profits while they can. What we are experiencing now is a pic-nic compared to what is to come.
Public transport is a joke. Up here it is expensive and unreliable. It can't be relied on for the daily commute, so people drive. Public transport relies on the same oil anyway, so it isn't a long-term solution.
To be honest I think we will be the last generation that can travel where and when it wants. The oil will run out, and there is no sign that anyone has produced a viable alternative. The oil companies should be ploughing their vast profits into researching new fuels, but I doubt that they are.

OK, so you want the USA health system i.e. pay up or die.
Fine.
I don't. So I don't mind paying taxes.
Alan
/agree - most of our car fuel price it tax - go look at the price of marine diesel and aviation fuel. Look at the tax levels on them - they are not taxed like us motorists as a nation we should have a national 'we are not moving our motors' day as a protest. I know it is a nightmare to get to work without the 'black gold' but maybe we should all make a stand. As British citizens if we all stay off the roads for 1 day the government may just get the message. But i bet my left nut it will make absolutely no difference rofl
If petrol tax is cut, there are two choices.
Which other tax would you like to raise to make up the lost revenue? Or which public service would you cut?
If you were the chancellor, what would your choice be?
Alan
NB this is not political, as any chancellor from any party has to make these choices.
We had to sell our 2 lt mondeo as hubby worked away and did a lot of travelling, the petrol was costing a bomb, so got a 1.4 Focus, which is much cheaper to run.
Thing is I would love a caravan, we sold ours when we sold the car (as when we towed that you could all most see the petrol disapearing!) But doubt we will ever be able to afford one now, with every thing increasing in price by the week (it seems!)
We have a small folding camper now, which is not too much to tow, but makes me wonder if we can afford to do that for much longer the way things are going!
Self employed courier..at the moment using £40-£45 a day in diesel 6 days a week..can I pass the increase on to my customers? not if I want to keep my contracts...insurance/repairs/road fund all increased..just working to pay my running costs no profit at all..customers always wanting to shave a few quid off the bill or delay paying..bigger the company the later they pay.....just lost a contract to a bunch of Brazillians who have quoted way below my actual cost to do the work..will they have hire and reward insurance/goods in transit/public liability..no chance..know for a fact that most of their drivers are here on student visas which allows them to work 15 hours a week..I do that in a day! does any body care? no chance..just get the job done cheaper or we find someone who can..welcome to the land of free enterprise...........sits back and pulls hair out whilst gently weeping.......
Maybe the government can cut cost by taking a pay and expences cut to a level that reflects thier worth to the community and have selected members of that comunity from all walks of life rate them. I think that having to pay for them to have widescreen Tv,s and washing machines in second homes is rediculas. And they wanted another level of these wasters and social misfits in a Northern Asembly, but us Gordies saw through them and voted NO. And also but not least why not go back to the tax rates when you had supertax, then maybe these big shares payouts and massive salary deals will stop. If you earn it you should be willing to part with it, it does seem that this country has become a haven for those who have and still want more and more and more. Alfred I do feel for you and there should be legal ways of stopping this sort of thing happening.
