Please could you jolly campers give me some help on what folding camper I could tow with a Renault Scenic 1.4.
After reading a lot of the posts I am now wondering if it would be at all possible to tow a camper with a 1.4 engine as the minimum seems to be a 1.5. We were hoping to buy a Pennine or Conway between 1999-2003 as the prices of these seem to fit our budget. We were looking at the pathfinder/crusader range but have come to the conclusion that we think that these particular models would not be viable with a 1.4. but would the lesser spec models be viable? We don't really want to change the car unless we need to but we would desperately like to buy a folding camper. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh I forgot to say, this site is so addictive even for none campers!!
Personally (peugeot 406) I think you would be pushing your luck with a pathfinder. Pullmans and sovereigns are very nice. Someone on here is trying to sell the toilet version of the sovereign which is a good alternative to the pathfinder.
------------- Good friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget.
I towed a Cardinal (hard top) with a 1.4 Jazz, the Max weight was 850Kgs, and a Countryman with a 1.4 Civic. I think the Pathfinder/Crusader are at least 1,000 Kgs, so would be too heavy, not sure about the other models.
Check the kerbweight and max tow limit of your car.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
I tow a Dandy Designer (just a little bigger than a Pennine Aztec) with a 1.4 Skoda Deisel. Used to tow it with a 1.4 petrol Peugeot 206 estate, but the mud flaps used to scrape going round corners with 2 adults in the back even without a trailer on! Well within the limits though for both. Goes along OK. Not fast accelerating, but we got over the Pyrenees last year with no bother.
You must check your handbook for the car spec. It will quote 2 weights that are important. 1, max towing weight. That is the max loaded weight of the trailer. The Camping & Caravan Club reccomend no more than 85% of your cars weight for safety. (This may be lower than the manufacturers figure). 2, The max Gross Train Weight. This = car + occupants + luggage + fuel + trailer + contents (awning, furniture etc). This could be the deciding factor! Remember your insurance is invalid if you overload & traffic Police carry small portable weighing machines. They do make checks.
We have a 1.6 Grand Scenic that will pull 650kk (unbraked). We have just got our first tt and it seems to tow it fine, but we haven't been on a long journey yet, but the advice we got from this site was fantastic in reassuring us that our car would be fine. So the best advice I can give you is to take the advice from other posters on here, they are great people with great things to say!!!
