Citronella seems to upset them.
But midges are very terrible? They attack in swarms??
They live in all Scotland or only near the loch?
Thank you very much.
Nice day.
Paola
Hi Paola, yes Scotland has many biting insects. Don't camp near lochs or in pine forests if you don't want to get bitten. Cover up arms & legs early mornings & late evenings if you do meet swarms. Insect repellant with DEET in it is effective, but use it with care, it attacks some plastics. They should not spoil the holiday!
we have found a balm stick called GET OFF works a treat the wife was always bitten before we found this now very few bites. Also as others have said early morn and dusk cover up and make sure your doors windows ect of unit are done up if you have no mossy net. we bought some net from aldi and made up a net to protect the sleeping area of our Oxford works a treat and can stay in place all the time. Have a great holiday in Scotland it should be the 8th wonder of the world.
Not sure where I read it, it may have been on here, but somebody said take one garlic pearl a day and the little blighters will keep away. As I was badly bitten at half term, I now have the family on one garlic pearl a day (apart from Richard who refuse to take them). My Skin so Soft is on order as well.
I also remember reading in a well known motocaravan mag years ago about carbolic soap, that would prob keep everything away aswell as midges!!! dunno if it works
Skin so Soft Woodland Fresh dry oil spray works for me ... and I have a friend in the army who swears it smells exactly like the insect repellant they give them in Iraq!!
I would second the advice of covering up early morning and evening though, however good your repellant. And I have also heard garlic pearls (or tablets) keeps the little blighters away, as does a daily dose of Marmite!
They are only on the West coast some places are worse than others.I live on Loch Lomond and have never been bothered with them I went caravanning to Ayr two weeks ago and they were terrible.

Stay away from trees near water is my best advice. They are not just on the West coast. Lots of inland areas have them too, but the slightest breeze gets rid of them. If you are bitten, Eurax lotion or cream from any chemist will stop any itching.
Hope you have a great holiday.

When we’re going up a hill of fortune, may we never meet a friend coming down
I`m not so sure that it is only the West Coast in Scotland who have midges, we live in the Middle in Lanarkshire and sometimes they seem to swarm everywhere it is damp or has water and trees together. I think it`s just your luck on the conditions and location - but I`d be prepared.
We got the advice about the Avon SSS spray from a lovely lady in Pitlochry serving in a local hardware/camping supply shop - she swore by it - and was a memeber of the Scottish Fly Fishing Team - so she probably had tried most things on the market.
We were out and about last weekend and I was really shocked to see the price of it in a well know shop for stopping off on the way up North. They were selling it for £7.99 per bottle!!!
It`s available at 2 bottle for £5 online - that sure is some mark up on the product.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
