I'm sure it has been asked before (sorry if you are ticked off with people asking) but what is the difference between a Trailer Tent and a Folding Camper?
A modern trailer tent opens out from the trailer, the main cabin is generally the sleeping area and you can put an awning onto it to create a kitchen and living area. Some trailer tents have the cooker/sink unit incorporated at one end of the trailer, others have units which are stored inside the trailer when not in use. When erected the whole lot has to be pegged down. A folding camper has everything in the main unit, doesn't need to be used with an awning, and doesn't need pegging down.

You're welcome Keely. Eleven years ago we got our first tt, it was a very old Conway and we had to erect the frame first then put the canvas over, like a big frame tent. This thing was huge, and it used to take two of us 3 hours to erect it and peg it all down! Fortunately the Jamet we have now is a lot easier than that!

Oh, I forgot to say, pricewise a fc is more expensive than a tt, also you have to buy the awning as an extra - usually another £900 or so - whereas the awning is included with a tt

i thought a trailer tent uses canvas like a tent in a trailer and a fc. was folding caravan. it has solid sides and when up looks like a normal caravan.
Yes, a tt is made of canvas like a normal tent, and a folding caravan has solid sides, but a folding camper has solid sides at the bottom and canvas on the top half, or in the case of a Dandy, pvc.

I've always described folding campers, like caravan base with a tent top. They can be used with or without an awning (like a caravan), but you can store them more like a trailer tent (the best of both worlds). Most have a seating/eating area, beds, cupboards, cooker and fridge on board. Hope this helps.

Trailer Tent=A tent in a trailer, ie. frame mounted on a trailer, seperate canvas, needs pegging down, kitchen in awning.
Modern trailer tents don't have what you would call a 'separate' canvas - the canvas is attached to the frame, and when you open out the frame the canvas opens out with it, although you do have to pull it down over the front and back

An Introduction to Trailer Tents and Folding Campers
Trailer tents and folding campers provide a much higher level of comfort when compared to dome and frame tent camping, whilst preserving the basic natural elements that make an outdoor holiday so enjoyable. Surprisingly many trailer tent and folding camper sales come from previous owners of caravans and small motorhome's. A step down you may think, yet every year, more and more people are waking up to the idea, that trailer tents and folding campers can offer genuine advantages over the more luxurious caravan and motorhome. Trailer tents and folding campers can provide a very reasonable level of comfort at a fraction of the cost of a caravan or motorhome and are significantly less complicated and expensive to maintain and use. They are also easier to tow, require far less storage space and devaluation figures are much easier on the back pocket.
Camperlands are the biggest trailer tent and folding camper retailer in the UK, with a large proportion of the Manchester showground dedicated to, displaying and demonstrating a comprehensive selection of new and used stock. Our trailer tent stock includes many of the popular models that can be bought from camping outlets up and down the country. However we take extra pride in our unique ability to offer trailer tents, which cannot be found anywhere else in the UK. We are sole UK distributors for many top European manufacturers including TransCamper, CampMaster, Camplet and Jamet and frequently have in stock specially designed trailer tents from Trigano. Trailer tents can accommodate between 2 to 8 people and are ideal for fun family and group holidays.
Folding campers are similar to trailer tents but on a grander scale with an enlarged chassis that can be as long as an 18ft caravan when erected. The larger size allows for the inclusion of features more commonly found on in caravans and motorhome's such as, 12v and 240v electrics, fitted fridges, heaters and cassette toilets, ovens, water heaters and sink and drainers. Other benefits only become evident when the folding camper is folded down such as, reduced height and length, which makes towing and storage much easier. The gross weight of a folding camper can be up to 50% less than some caravans. Folding campers require no pegging and take about 5-10 minutes to fully erect. Comfortable accommodation is provided for 4-6 people but this can be extended to 10 by utilising the awning and bedroom extensions.
We have provided quite a lot of information for you to take in on this and subsequent trailer tent and folding camper pages but feel it will benefit you, particularly if you are considering your first purchase and have no knowledge to draw from.
I've got a folding camper and got a couple of photos on my profile, not much help but at least a start. If you look at them on ebay it's a little clearer.
I have a trailer tent(see my gallery) and I dont necessarily have to peg out. If I use the awning then I peg out - If I dont use the awning then I dont peg out.

Presumably because the main unit is on a solid floor a few inches above the ground, where most makes of tt aren't. How much room do you get in one of those? We saw something similar at the NEC earlier this year but it didn't look very big.

Hi Hoppity, I think I would say your folding thingie is classed as a folding camper, because when I was looking out to buy a 2nd hand camper, I phoned Camping Intnl. at Gillingham, they said that they had a 2nd hand Raclet Quickstop folding camper for sale that was reasonable. We did go and have a look as I had not seen one before. This one was the type with door on on the short side (inline?), we wanted one with the door on the side, so the awning would be bigger and have more living area in the unit as there is 5 of us! Anyway I trust you are pleased with your new purchase and look forward to using it. We are off next week for a few nights in ours, taking heaters, hot water bottles and plenty of warm clothes though!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
