Once again, I'm after your thoughts please for a first budgetbtrailer tent purchase for a family of four ( 2 adults, 2 children under 10). Seen a decent looking Conway Mirage on Ebay and am considering it. Is there anything I should know about this model, or do you think it might be suitable. By the way its a 2001.
The mirage appears to be much of a muchness as any other Conway trailer tent.
Some t/t's have features such as a centre panel in which a wardrobe or toilet area is housed extending the length of the unit and increasing storage capacity slightly.
When looking at a trailer tent :-
Check the integrity of the canvas - any holes, rips, tears, staining, mildew.
Check the canvas behind where the kitchen unit has stood - look for lighter patches against the light, this could indicate grease or worse detergent spillage/contamination, you'll never proof those areas if contaminated.
Smell - use your nose, does it smell musty or damp, are you sure that is just dirt on the canvas or the start of something else.
Check the trailer - do the beds fold correctly, is there any distorted or bent tubing.
Does the trailer stand flat to the ground or does it tilt to one side ( suspension problem ).
Does the canvas fit the frame ( a bit of water and a stretch when pegging should rectify a tight fit )
Get underneath and check the integrity of the floor and whilst your there the welds holding the trailer together.
Does the cooker work - fitted Conway items can be a pain to get hold of and quite expensive.
There must be many other checks, but these are off the top of my head.
Generally, Conway are very high quality and if regularly proofed and the trailer cared for will last a lifetime - my own Royale is now coming up to 20 years old and looks like new - it doesn't smell musty but does smell of canvas and fresh air which on first sniff to the uninitiated could be mistaken for a slight musty smell. You'll know musty when you smell it !.
If I was in the market for a trailer tent I would buy Conway, but that is based on my own experience.
The mirage looks ideal for your needs - give it a proofing before your first excursion, if it rains expect a slight fine drizzle through the canvas until the weave tightens up and enjoy.
But please - if you take a television, pitch somewhere away from me.
Hi could you advise please,
I've just purchassed a Conway mirage great
I've replaced jockey wheel as rod was bent,
I've taken wheels off and previous owner has replaced one hub
And both side bearings
I did notice that both wheels the outerside of face of tyre has only about 1/2 inch clearance from body
There is no rub on tyres what so ever,
But just need this clarification as I'm a single mother and children will be travelling in my car
I'd be really worried if this is going to blow out on me travelling down the motorway
Hope this is ok for me to ask thankyou joann
